Question for those of you who have had your babies

I was an avid exerciser before being put on restricted activity.  I know I'm going to want to get back into a work out routine at some point after the babies are born.

How long did it take you to get some sort of energy back and when were you able to start some sort of real routine where exercise was an option?  I cant imagine how tired I'm going to be and for how long.

Re: Question for those of you who have had your babies

  • My babies are 7 weeks old and I went for my first jog just this weekend. I was probably physically able to at about 5 weeks PP, but there is no way I could find the time. Still the only way I'm going to be able to work out is if they are being good enough that I don't feel guilty leaving hubby alone with them or if we have extra help around.

That being said, if the weather were nicer we would be walking a LOT. About a week after they were born the weather was nice enough that we did go walking once a day. It was a change of scenery for them and I needed to get out of the house! Hopefully you are having your babies when the weather will be suitable to get them out in the stroller!

  • I was thinking of joining the local YMCA and getting a family membership just so someone will watch the babies while I work out.  I think they will start watching them at 6 weeks, but I know at the gym I used to work at they would page you every time there was a diaper change.  I dont know if this is the case with the Y.  My guess is that if I try to work out at home and Im the only one here, it would never happen.

  • I didn't get my energy back until around 3 months PP. The kids were sleeping through the night and we were somewhat on a schedule, I just have to try and time it when DH is home or when they are happy enough to go on a walk/jog. The first couple of times working out, I was very sore at my incension, but it stopped after a week.

  • It took me 3 months to get any energy back.  But I was running back and forth to the NICU for 3 weeks with one home and one there and recovering from a c-section. But I started daily walks with them in the DSNG at 4 weeks (July) and it really helped my mood if not my energy level.

  • If the weather was nicer out, Id honestly be ready for a brisk walk or run with the babies now.  I used to run or walk atleast a mile a day up until about 28 weeks and I miss it.  I look forward to my 6 week appt and getting cleared to get back on the treadmill.

  • I started working out occassionally around 6 wks.  But nothing consistent until they were 3 months.  It was too hard to find time, and I was just too exhausted.  Even now it's still not as consistent as I would like.  It's just hard finding time and finding someone to watch the kids when I work out. Like now my kids have colds, so I can't take them to the Kids Club at my gym and when they get colds they seem to last 2 weeks, which means I really won't be able to workout for 2 wks unless I can get a Grandma to watch them or I go after they go to bed, but then I don't get any time with DH.
  • I forgot to say that I walked at least once a day with my babies until mid-October.  And our walks were at least 2 miles each time.  I never was a big walker, I prefer to run.  But even with the jogging stroller I wasn't all that comfortable running with them.   I started going on walks with them literally the day after I got home from the hospital, and I had a c-section.  The first few days, DH had to push the stroller and we went for shorter walks.  But after that I could walk at least 2 miles and many times we'd go for 2 walks a day, but my babies were born May 30th, so at the start of summer.
  • Around 6 weeks I started walking outside with the babies (when the weather allowed)...around 3 months (when they started sleeping though the night) I felt ready to start an exercise "routine"...but really there still aren't enough hours in the day and I only work out at the gym 2 days a week on my lunch break...
  • I was an avid exerciser pre pg so I was always curious of this before,too....I had a crazy abnormal C recovery (pp clotting/bleeding issues) so I didn't dare do anything other than take care of the girls the first 6 wks. (Believe me, this really was where all your energy goes, you really won't mind not working out!!). I did just light walks or errands with them as "exercise". I feel pumping in and of itself wears me out LOL!

Once I was given the green light at about 6.5 wks, I started going back to the gym. I did about 20 min. of cardio that first week or so (elliptical mainly) and went about 3-4 days/wk. I also did light weights (5-8 lbs.). I didn't do abs the first two wks b/c of the c/s.

Now I go about 3-4 days/wk (DH watches them since our gym doesn't have care) and I'm able to do about 30-40 min. cardio (either elliptical, jog, or stair step) or do a weights/cardio 60 min. class they offer. I incorp. some abs back in there and thankfully it wasn't painful!!

  • I started actively exercising at 10 weeks. I had a c-section, which I think made a difference.

  • I started working out again at 4m pp and got more serious (started doing the 30 Day Shred 6 days a week) at 5m; before then I couldn't even think about it!

  • I started working out after the 6-week appointment....took it easy the first two weeks because the incision from the c-section still hurt.

Some days I'm too tired to workout (like today) but try to workout at least 3 times per week).  I'm up to running 3.5 miles now when I go out for a run...I'm still much slower than I used to be...but that will come with time!.
