when to pump question

LO is still eating every 2 hours, we get a 3 hour stretch on occasion, but I would like to start pumping to build a freezer stash and so that someone can feed her to give me a little sleep. My question is, when do I pump when I barely have an hour in between feedings? Also, how much does a 1 month old eat if I do have DH give her a bottle?

Re: when to pump question

  • Pump when you have time - I def. try to pump after the middle of the night feeding, as from 3-5a you supposedly make the most milk. How much you get at each pump session will tell you how often to pump.

As for how much - DS will eat about 2oz and then eat again 2h later. Sometimes a bit more, like 3 oz. With bfing, there is no way to know - but I read that you shouldn't offer a bf baby more than 3 oz at a time.

  • Oh - and you should def. pump when he eats if someone else gives him a bottle, or you risk your supply decreasing since you aren't feeding.

Why do we do this again? Lol.

  • The pedi said not to let DS eat more than 4oz at a time.  I pump exclusively and will give him 2oz to start.  If he's still hungry, then I give him another 2oz.  He's almost 4 weeks old.
  • My niece was having 3 oz of formula up until about 6 weeks, however, my little piranha can easily down 4 oz and still want more. I try to make 3 oz bottles and offer him more if 3 oz isn't enough. But at minimum I'd say he takes 3.
