Suspecting thrush and expressed BM?

Ok, so I still haven't given up (see post below from earlier today, LOL). I was considering that maybe all the pain I am having on my left side was due to thrush. Then someone mentioned it in my earlier post and after doing some reading, I'm really starting to think that could be it. I'm going to call the doc on Monday but until then I'm pumping the left side because it hurts too badly for DD to nurse on it. I've been feeding DD the expressed BM. Is this OK? All the resources - including kellymom - say it's OK to give expressed BM during treatment but right now I'm not being treated. I really want to avoid passing this onto the right side because right now it's the only side I can nurse from!! Also what can I do tomorrow to relieve some of the pain until I can get in to see the doctor.

Re: Suspecting thrush and expressed BM?

  • I was told when I had thrush to not give DS the pumped milk (although I did and didn't have a problem). You can treat yourself w/ Monistat, just be sure to wash thoroughly before nursing, or even Gentian Violet (not sure where you get that). As for the pain, it took almost 2 wks for my thrush to clear up, it slowly got better, hang in there!

  • EBM right now should be OK, but they don't want you to pump and freeze, then give that months later when you aren't being treated. ( I gave DD frozen milk from then and she is fine)

  • When I had thrush, it was so painful for DS to latch on so most of the time I pumped and used the freshly expressed BM in a bottle.  Do not freeze the BM because if you use it later when you've gotten rid of the thrush, you run the risk of getting it again if you use that frozen milk.  I also used Gentian Violet too. It's very messy.  Most pharmacies do not have it and I was able to get it from a private pharmacy (not like a big chain). I suggest you contact your local LaLeche League group and find out where you can get the GV. They would probably know.
