I would take something to keep the child busy like some type of toy. Are you talking about taking the food/cookies for the parent or the child. Sometimes there are food restrictions for ppl in the hospital and you would want to make sure the child didn't have restrictions. Maybe some crayons/coloring or something depending on how the child feels.
When my dd was 2 she was hospitalized for 4 days for croup. We took all her dvd movies because each room had a player and they entertained her. I would buy a new DVD for the child.
I took a travel Aquadoodle to a friends 2 yo when they were in the hospital and they seemed to enjoy it and some cute socks because I know the ones they gave my DD in the hospital kept falling off.
Healthy, non-perishable snacks are always good. Trader Joe's has a boat load of them. Also, magazines for mom. At least in my nephew's case, he is often sedated and sleeps a lot.
magazines/books for MOM! Last year when my DD was 2 mos old, she had RSV and had to be put in hospital..i was bored outta my mind! But she still slept alot then...or maybe some movies!?

Re: 2 y.o in hospital- what to take?
IF they are allowed to have food, I would do crackers, pop tarts, granola bars. When L was in the hospital (at 8 weeks), I appreciated all of that.
For the kiddo, maybe rent some movies (if they have a dvd player in there), crayons, socks/slippers, car, a cool new cup, etc.
How about a bouquet of balloons?
