Lipase in Frozen BM?

Yesterday, I thawed some BM for my husband to give my son a bottle.  I noticed it had a weird smell (sour almost) and tasted a drop (gross, I know) and it tasted funky.  I defrosted 3 different bags and all the same. I have a deep freezer with over 100 oz of BM - Do I have to throw it away??

I read about lipase - is it bad for the baby? I have given my son once before frozen BM from the same batch and he took it. Any advice?

Re: Lipase in Frozen BM?

  • Excess lipase is totally fine for the baby if he'll drink it.  some babies are just pickier than others :)

  • Not dangerous at all for your baby, so you're safe as long as he agrees to drink it. You can also mix some fresh milk into thawed milk if your baby does not like the 'weird' taste.

Try to thaw slowly (in the fridge) and warm in hot water, not boiling water. I've noticed the hotter the water, the stronger the smell.

GL and I'm so jealous of your stash by the way!! :)
