WWYD: Pump and Dump?

Sooo, I hate hate hate the idea of wasting milk, especially while I have a low supply.

However, we are visiting good friends tonight and sampling their homebrew Imperial Stout, which I am very excited about (and I do plan on drinking more than one every two hours). Given my current supply issues, I really am leaning towards pumping once or twice tonight...probably once around 8 when J usually goes to bed, and again when I get home.

I will just cry as I pour it down the drain...

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

  • Per kellymom.com you dont have to p&d to get liquor out of your system if you wait 2-3 hrs buuuttt since you will need to p&d purely to keep your supply up it will still have alcohol content so it sucks but just think of it as boosting your supply? Pump before you leave and while your there and when you get home maybe that will really help to boost it? Have fun!!

**Im going out tonight to a local bar and plan on pumping in my car in the parking lot at leeasst twice...not for supply...not because of drinking but because these stupid boobs are HUGE and when Im not around my ds for a few hrs they are insanely huge and painful. Pumping in the car on new yrs is something I never thought Id do lol***

  • There's no reason to dump it. Even if you were absolutely hammered only 2% of the alcohol is in your milk. It's absolutely fine to store it.

So pump and save it. Have fun!

  • If you are sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to nurse.  As long as you don't overdo it, you can keep all of the milk.
  • IKWYM. Wasting does suck but I would pump right before you drink so you're not wasting as much when you have to pump and dump.
  • here's what i do when i don't want to waste milk, but i've been drinking- i mix it with a whole bunch of milk from when i was not drinking- it will be like 1/6th drinkydrink milk and 5/6ths regular milk. i figure it's diluted enough to not really matter. and she never acts any different from it. my pedi says it's fine. :)

  • I use these alcohol test strips that i found with the pumping supplies at target to test milk i pump if i am not sure if i should keep the milk  I have a supply issue too so I understand that pain of having to dump which is why i rarely drink now!

If you are hammered you should not feed/nurse your baby that milk until the alcohol is out of your system. No, you don't have to pump and dump and you can't wait until it's out of your system but if it will be a while and you want to keep up your supply, then you can pump and dump. From my experience, one missed pumping hasn't affected my supply.

Hmmm...now this or the test strips I may try.

I don't know where the source is from, but everything I've read says hammered= not OK milk for baby. Regardless I am not comfortable with that personally.

Thanks for the help, ladies! I don't plan on getting hammered, but given my tolerance after barely drinking for the last year, I am pretty sure DH will be driving, not me! I drink more than one per two hours and I am definitely not driving/breastfeeding material.

  • Blondie has the right idea...It's called MILKSCREEN and it's available pretty much at any pharmacy...you just dip the strip in  the milk and it will let you know whether you should keep or dump. Found it here, but should be at a convenience store like walgreens or rite aid https://www.mamaista.com/2009/04/26/mamas-first-post/

the thing with these is they are SUPER sensitive.  I will be absolutely sober (and drive without thinking twice) and it will still detect alcohol in my  milk.  I cant feed it to them in good conscious so I dump...but I prefer not to use them and go by the rule "safe to drive, safe to nurse"
