s/o Jr's.

Why do boys get a Jr. or II (or III, or whatever) but girls do not?

Re: s/o Jr's.

  • Maybe it's because their names won't change but a girl has a chance of her last name changing because of marital status.  NO clue though. Just my guess.

  • Well, I guess you'd only be a junior or a second for so long until you got married and changed your named.....traditionally speaking, of course.
  • That makes sense.  My Mom is named after my great aunt & it just really bugged me growing up that she didn't get a "II".  I thought she got cheated. lol

  • I have never met a woman (that I'm aware of) who has the same name as her mother.  My theories:

    1. Men are more egotistical, and women don't feel the need to pass on their full name, without any changes, to their offspring.

    2. It's a throwback to the fact that it is easier to trace people back through their mothers, as they tend to be the primary caregiver and actually birth the child.  There's generally never any question about who the mother is.  The father, however, is much less obvious - cheating, etc.  Maybe it's a more obvious display of parenthood for the male set?

    3. Men's names are (historically speaking) more "important" as men got to do more in society and weren't required to stay home and keep house.  So, there was more incentive for the male's name to be passed down and all the respect/etc that it conferred onto the child.

  • One of the daughters of Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger's characters in Brokeback Mountain was Alma Jr.

I tried to convince my husband that we should name our baby (whether it was a boy or girl) Kelly Jr. (half joking) after me but he veto'd the idea.
