Do you know what a Mummer is?

I'm a Philly girl and am looking forward to the parade tomorrow. I hope that my kids like it as much as I do. I'm just wondering how many people who aren't local actually know what a Mummer is.

    I LOVE the Mummers!!!!  (grew up at the Jersey Shore)  We watched it on TV every New Years Day!  Sadly, they don't broadcast it in NY.  DH is from Michigan and had never heard of it.  When DD is a little older I want to take her to see the parade.  Are you going to the parade?

    No idea!  My mind also went to some sort of sexual thing too.

    Well, my cousin used to call our Grandmother, "Mummer" when she was a tot, but I'm guessing thats not the answer you are looking for. lol

    Really though, no clue.

    I didn't until I married my Philly husband.  He has family from south Philly that are mummers.  He wants to go up there tomorrow morning, but I think it's going to get rained/snowed out.

     I still don't really "get" it...

    its an old Philly tradition that goes along withthe NY day parade. Men (and now women but thats debatable) dress up in sequins and feathers and dance or play instruments and compete. There is a lot more that goes into it but thats the gist of it.

    I think it is one of those things that if you do not experience it/not a part of it, you probably dont get it and think we are crazy  Big Smile

    Of course :) Cannot wait for the parade. We'll go out tomorrow and do our Mummer's Strut on the driveway.
