I'm not sure but I think most people do rice cereal first....however, since your LO is almost 6 months, have you thought about skipping cereal altogether and going straight to fruits and veggies?
I have to do more research on it but I think that's what we'll do- it's called baby led weaning- and we'll do a variation of it I think...from what I've heard there's no real nutritional value to the cereal and if you wait till 6 months for solids (the recommended age) their digestive system is mature enough to go right to fruits and veggies. I think I've got that all right lol...

I think it's mostly a preference of your baby. My friend started with cereal, and her baby hated it, so she switched to oatmeal, and he took it fine. We only give S cereal in her night time bottle, she loves it though. I had bought both, just in case she didn't take cereal, but she's fine with it. But like PP said, you may just want to go to veggies & fruit.
