s/o potty learning: where to start??

i'm ready to gently start nudging DD back to the potty. where do i start?? any books i should read or should i just wait for her to tell me she needs to use the potty?

(back story: DD has always had some serious constipation issues so the pedi had us put her on a toddler potty to help her push things out instead of with-holding and making things worse. well she used the potty without fail from about 6 months to about a year for #2. then her poo started to even out and she got past the with-holding and major constipation. now she'll go in her diaper any time/day without wanting to be changed at all. i have to force her to get her diaper changed, even when its soaking or full. she wouldn't sit on the potty at all, then i got her down to sitting on the potty when i would go with her clothes on, now every once in a while when i go she'll ask to sit on the potty without her diaper, but not produce anything.)

needless to say i'm a serious newb about this PL thing and since i have never been around children or cared for one before DD... i'm at a serious loss. TIA

Re: s/o potty learning: where to start??

  • I started with sitting DD on the potty before and after her bath every night. Before, while the water is running in the tub to get the idea that we potty before taking a bath, and hoping the running water stimulated her :-) It took a while (couple weeks) but she did go on the potty. Now she's to the point where if she gets the urge while in the bath, she'll tell me and get out to use the potty. I never pushed her to use the potty during the day at all and she showed no interest for MONTHS...but just recently (like this week) she's been asking to "peepee" more during the day. I just have to take her pants and diaper off and she goes with some encouragement. She can't take her pants off yet by herself so I haven't done training pants yet very much. I figure she'll do it all at her own pace but I think it helped to start using the potty at bathtime. Good luck!
