TTC After a Loss

Re: Financial Situation

  • We are definitely not hurting, but we are very frugal.  My DH and I both work, we live with my parents and are saving to buy a house.  We just bought a new car with cash in July (mine got pretty torn up in an accident), so while we don't have any debt, it set us back a little in the house buying venture.  In general, we are pretty simple people and don't buy a whole lot.  Not to mention, my mom works at Goodwill and I get way nicer stuff there than I would paying full price for it at the store (note, I got a really nice leather Coach bucket purse for Christmas... from GOODWILL!).  Hopefully we'll find a house we like soon, but even if we don't, I don't mind too much.  The longer it takes, the closer we are to being able to buy our house for cash.  Our situation will definitely change in August though.  I'm planning on quitting my engineering job (or going to part time) when I have the baby.

Thats sounds great! Living with parents helps so much! What kind of car did you get? Big Smile

  • I make quite a bit of money, but throw $2400 a month away on student loans, so while it seems like we should be doing really well, there's very little room to save up for a house or to pay down loans any quicker.  That being said, I can't complain.  My apartment is nice, our cars are reliable and I never worry about going out to grab dinner.  I will have to tone down the clothes shopping if a get a BFP though - I have been doing a lot of retail therapy lately.

  • We do ok.  If we cut out all the unnecessary extras, we would be doing amazing lol, but I'm ok with how we are :D  None of us really go without, and I'm cheap as hell, I don't really want a new car or need anything new, kwim?

  • DH and I do watch what we spend but if I do want to go out and buy something I can.  We just put new floors in the entire house, santos mahogany, and got new counter tops in our kitchen.  That being said...DH works his butt off and has an excellent job which he is super good at...software engineer.  I work in a school...not fabulous pay...but I have written a couple of books and created some classroom based materials that have been helping out.  I also travel and teach teachers!  Fun!  So while we are not hurting we do watch and try not to go overboard because we are planning to have children someday soon and want to make sure we can provide for them as well!
  • We do pretty good. On paper it seems like we should have lots of money, but it's amazing how little is left after withholdings! And we can get by comfortably b/c we live within our means. I'm definitely the saver, DH the spender. I'd be super happy if we weren't constantly having to save for stuff to fix up the house and could spend our savings on fun stuff.
  • DH does very well, but we live in an incredibly expensive city and I stopped working when DS was born (largely because of the cost of daycare here in the city).  We have student loans and some cc debt (from our wedding, bad choices) and it makes it incredibly hard to get ahead.  We have been trying to get some money saved up and get debt free, but it's challenging.

We're really hoping to move soon to a cheaper area soon, that will help a great deal!
