1st birthday help

Ok, so we are doing a ONEderland birthday theme for D's 1st birthday.  Cake wise, what should I do? (can't post clicky at work)

1. Bake Cake?

2. Bake Cupcakes with snowflake theme?

3. Order cake?

4.Order cupcakes?

I'm fairly crafty, I just worry about time constraints ect, BUT I want it to be special. TIA!

Re: 1st birthday help

  • I thought about making a cake for Jillian's 1st since I love baking.  But in the end I decided that realistically between work and party prep and the number of people invited, there was no way that would happen.  I would have loved to order cupcakes from Trophy (my fav!) but 3 or 4 dozen would have cost me a fortune.  Instead I went with Costco cake.

  • I bought New York Cupcakes for DDs first birthday. I was going to make a cake but I just ran out of time (see my photographer post). They were much prettier than anything I would have made anyway.
  • If you do 1 big cake a few cupcakes you could do in in a few hours.  I had DS's party at 2 so I had the entire day to get ready.  I baked the cakes the night before and decorated the day of.  Keep the rest of the food simple (veggies and hummus/dip, snacky food) and make the focus be on the cake and ice cream.

  • I took the day off before her party and baked all the cupcakes. It took all day but it was awesome and they tasted great. So I'd vote #2 if you can get some time off. It was nice because she was at DC so I had tons of time.
  • My Etsy invitation lady does a ONEderland theme!

    She is most awesome.

I'm doing a 6 inch smash cake, surrounded by cupcakes and having Melissa from a cupcake named desire do it...she even rents out the cake stands, so it's pretty easy on our end. Plus she's about the least expensive I've found, and her cakes are fairly tasty (have only tried two flavors so far).

If you want you could bake the smaller one yourself and order the surrounding cupcakes.
