I'm so nervous about the internal I have today. My doc said he would be able to give us a better estimate on whether we will be early, close to on time, or possibly late. I guess that's making it more real for me.
Really? My dr said internals don't really provide much info -- especially the first one. They can tell more from seeing change from one exam to the next, to see if things are progressing. At any rate, don't worry! My internals have been very similar to a regular pelvic exam. I didn't have any spotting or anything afterward. And, even though the info doesn't mean much, I still get excited if there's been some sort of change!
Internals really don't mean much unless you are really dilated. Otherwise, you can stay 1-3cm dilated for weeks or you can go any day even if you are not dilated at all.
Try not to get your hopes up too much! I was 1cm 50% effaced last week and was exactly the same yesterday (boo). My doctor told me that I can go any day or she will induce me a week after my due date. So, that gives me a 4 week window of when this baby can come.
I really wouldn't take it to heart...Dr's really have no idea when the baby will come...At my second internal last week the Dr said I could be in labor "any day now" and I'm still sitting here waiting... All they can tell you is how dialated and effaced you are. But on a positive note, it's really not all that bad! A little uncomfortable, but it's real quick!
I really can't help but think what is the point of internals. ugh and they always put me in the room way too early so I have to sit there pantsless with a paper sheet that is way to small over my lap freezing for 15 minutes or more! Next time around I am going to request any other doc in the practice. This guy is always late! They aren't that bad but it's still uncomfy and unfortunatly they don't tell you much at all. grrr sorry for the vent!
My 1st internal is today as well. My doc has refused to do them up until now, and even then it's only "by request only". Apparantly (as PP stated) they don't mean much! GL!
As PP said, they really aren't that bad. My first one I was nervous, but now that I know what to expect, it's just a moment or two of being uncomfortable.
Yeah, as pp said internals don't always mean much. I am 80% effaced and +1 station. I asked my doc if that means I could go early and all he said is I could go tomorrow or a month from now. Not very helpful. But that my body is getting ready...so exciting!!
And don't be nervous. IMO it is just like a regular exam.
I had my first yesterday and it really wasn't that bad. Uncomfortable, yes. The cramping and slight spotting afterwards bothered me more than the exam.

I don't do internal exams.
