Pregnant after a Loss

protein shake ideas....

I am HORRIBLE at breakfast (even pre-pregnancy I don't do eggs, don't have time to sit and eat a bowl of cereal in the am, etc), so DH had gotten me into making protein shakes using Whey protein. Now, with the LO on board, I'm don't want to use the Whey protein (cause it has a lot of other funky junk in it)..any ideas on a smoothie or breakfastg shake that KU gals can drink?

Re: protein shake ideas....

  • I mix together yogurt, oj, 1/2 cup of frozen berries, and a banana.  I used to put whey protein in it, but now I leave it out, and take along a piece of peanut butter toast.  You could probably mix in some peanut butter to the smoothie...hmm...maybe.

ETA:  added the word "cup" -- that makes more sense.

  • never thought of yogurt....going to have to try that tomorrow morning....thanks, chica!!

    P.S.  Congrats on a great u/s today!!!!!!!!

  • substitute oats for the whey like the non instant dry oatmeal. I've done that before and it wasn't bad. Or apricot (or) raspberries with a cup of milk and a banana.

I also read that you can use cottage cheese instead of whey, but i cannot imagine what that tastes like

I use non-fat vanilla yogurt (Dannon, usually).  In the summer, I'll use fresh berries, but for now, I use Dole frozen berries.  My trainer at the gym gave me the idea.  It's not exactly low-calorie, but nutritional content is pretty good.  I'll ask the nutritionist when I see her, and report back to you on what is a good protein substitute.  Sure, yogurt has a little, but there's gotta be something better.

    And thanks for the congrats!!!

  • Actually funny you asked.  I was about to throw out some Strawberry and Vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast packs today (I bought a variety pack on accident and usually only drink the chocolate flavor).  It had recipes for smoothies on it.  You mix up the milk and powder with ice and throw in some additional fruit...voila!  Plus it's rich in nutrients and you get your calcium!
  • Why are you guys afraid of the whey protein?  I've never read anything bad about it but haven't specifically looked it up.

  • Good call on ditching the whey protein. I used to drink a protein shake every morning prior to getting pregnant, but you're right... lots of junk in it and truthfully, baby needs wholesome foods, not supplements.

I make a shake with greek yogurt (high protein, lower sugar than regular yogurts), frozen mixed berries, 1/2 banana, splash of OJ. Really tasty!!

  • The issue with a whey protein supplement is first, that it is a supplement. Baby needs nutrition from wholesome foods. Secondly, many of them contain artificial sweetners. Not the best idea when pregant. There are lots of other chemicals in there, and really, it's best to stick with wholesome foods that are as unprocessed as possible when pg.
  • I just had a smoothie for breakfast.  I used a pack of strawberry carnation instant breakfast powder, 3/4 cup milk (I didn't have OJ), 1/4 cup low fat vanilla yogurt, 1/2 a banana, and some ice since the bananas weren't frozen.  It was good!
