Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Loveys & SIDS

Our pedi recommended a lovey for 4.5 month LO to help her self-soothe in the crib... Ours is one of those with a lil' animal head with a small piece of fabric hanging down as the body.  For those that have one like this, are you worried about SIDS at all?  I'm having a hard time figuring out how it is really any different than having an actual blanket in there in terms of risks.

Re: Loveys & SIDS

  • Yes I worry.  My dd has the miYim one.  Same thing as you are describing.  I asked this the other day....and came to the conclusion that I just will take it out after she falls asleep.

  • I put Harrison in his crib with a lovey today for his nap.

The only thing that made him happy was nom-noming on his lambie (a stuffed lamb).  So I gave it to him.  He was happy in his crib with Lambie for a solid 30 minutes before he started crying.

I honestly don't worry about it.

If you are worried, put the him down with the lovey & then when he's asleep, go in & get the lovey out of the crib.

  • I wouldn't do it.  I'd rather DS have a paci.  I guess the theory is that maybe a lovey is lighterweight and easier for a baby to push away from their face, but I wouldn't sleep easy with that in his crib, until he's quite a few months older.  I always assumed that loveys were invented as something that toddlers could get attached to that was a combination of a stuffed animal and a blankie, that was small, easy to carry, and easy to clean for parents.
  • DD has a lovey that she uses to soothe herself to sleep some nights.  I make sure it's away from her face before I go to bed for peace of mind.
  • I yank after they are asleep.

  • DD falls asleep with hers up by her face but it isn't very big so I don't worry about it. It's one of those tiny flat animals.

  • I'm not ready for DS to have his in the crib yet... I'd think that a receiving blanket would be better than a lovey SIDS wise, but we don't use either.

  • I'm worried about it too. I just started using a lovey yesterday, and it helps her fall asleep (I use a paci too). I take it away as soon as I put her in the crib.
