Pregnant after a Loss

How many u/s should I expect?

I was surprised to find out on the 1st tri board that most women are only allowed 1 u/s during their pregnancy.  I've been through 3 m/cs and 2 rounds of fertility treatments so I've had a LOT of u/s over the last few years.  I'm now 8 wks pg, have had 2 (successful!) u/s by my RE, and have been released to my OB.  What should I expect from here on out?  I assumed I would continue to have regular u/s but now I'm not so sure and of course a little freaked out.  My first u/s with my OB is next week so I'll definitely be asking him then but am interested in what others have experienced.

Re: How many u/s should I expect?

  • My insurance will only pay for one if there is a medical reason to need one. My midwife thought I was further along than we thought, so we got one at 15 weeks but now there is no reason that I need one so I don't get anymore..unless of course later in the pregnancy we can't tell which way the head is facing. It just depends on your insurance and your doctors office I think...it varies.

  • My insurance pays for 3.... it all depends on your insurance and what your dr is willing to do.

  • So far I have had 6. 5 medical and 1 elective. 5w,6w, 8w, 12w, 17w (elective), 18w.

I have another one scheduled for 24 weeks (medical). I think it's all based on the Dr. GL!

  • After my RE releases me, I will be getting an ultrasound every two weeks from week 10-28.  After that, I will get ultrasounds every week.  I had a late loss though, and they are not 100% sure why it happened.  They think it was due to infection, but because they are not sure.... I will be getting ultrasounds to check my fluid levels, cervix length, and lo's growth.  I think it has a lot to do with what doctor you are seeing.  I am only seeing a perinatologist, and no OB this time around.

  • It really depends on your medical history and insurance.

DD - 4 ultrasounds.  One at 9 weeks (standard practice at that OB's), one at 14 weeks (new OB when we moved), one to gender identify at 20 weeks, one at 37 weeks to see if baby was still breech.

DS - one ultrasound at 20 weeks.

Baby #3 - 3 ultrasounds so far: 1 at 11 weeks to ensure not multiples (we used clomid), 1 at 14 weeks to check measuring (I was measuring 3 weeks ahead), and 1 at 22 weeks.

  • My insurance only covers one... but my OB bills them as "xrays" so they are still covered and I only have to pay my 20% for each of them. I have had 3 ultrasounds so far (all billed as xrays) and then I have my big u/s in a few days which will be billed as my ultrasound. I am not sure what my doctor does for later in the pregnancy as far as ultrasounds go.. probably just use the doppler unless they find something they need to monitor at my big u/s.

You can always call your doctors office and ask.. lol

  • It definitely depends on your doc and your insurance. I will end up with at least 3, one at the 1st appt, one for the NT scan and one at 20 weeks. I'm not sure what my ob does after that.

  • it depends on your Dr. and in my case, maternal fetal medicine, i have had eight so far (6 wk for heartbeat, 12 wk NT scan, 15 wk early anatomy, 20 wk full anatomy, 22 wk cardio echogram, 24, 28, and 32 wk growth u/s for previously identified DS markers)... hopefully no more - all covered by insurance, but various amounts billed each time for the copay
