Godparents?

If you will have godparents for your LO, when/how are you asking? Any cute way or just straight up asking if they will be the godparent? Are you waiting until LO is here to ask?

Re: Godparents?

  • We haven't decided how we are going to ask, but we know who we are asking.  I can't wait to see what others say :)

  • We've just now finalized our decision but aren't making a big deal about it so they don't feel bad declining. We're asking them to be godparents in the sense that they will care for our children if something happens to us so it's quite a commitment. We plan to ask them next time we are alone with them and can talk face-to-face.
  • We are waiting until LO is here to ask them, but it's not a foreign conversation as we've mentioned it to them before. I plan on buying my girlfriend who we are asking a birth stone ring of babies month, or possibly a necklace.  She loves jewelry and I know it would mean a lot to her since she isn't able to have her own children.

    Good Luck~

  • LO's godparents aren't a couple- godmother is my cousin and godfather is DH's best friend.  Neither will have any kind of responsibility in case of our deaths- I would not allow either of them to raise our child, but I had to ask my cousin because I'm her son's godmother and DH's best friend would have created a scene if he wasn't the godfather.  We did nothing cute to ask them- I asked my cousin when I happened to be over at my aunt's house dropping off something and I think DH asked his friend via e-mail.

We're not "cutesy" people, though- we didn't do anything special to ask our attendants to be in our wedding, either.

  • We asked the godfather last week, just had him over for dinner and asked if he would do us the honors.
  • I am both of my nephew's godmother, so I plan to ask my brother and sister-in-law. My DH's brother (only sibling) isn't very religious and doesn't go to church, so he wouldn't really be a great choice. My brother and SIL go to church and would be really great.

I plan to ask them once we talk with the church about the baptism and schedule when we will do it.

As far as how we will ask? hmmm I wasn't asked in any sort of special way. So I guess just tell them that we think it'll be an honor for them to do it.??

  • We waited until we started planning DD1's baptism, and we just asked them in person.

  • We asked a couple who are friends of ours when I was ~31 weeks and we were confident in our decision.  We went out to dinner with them and just asked them.  I didn't want to do anything too cutsie, etc. b/c we never discussed it with them before and didn't want to make a super huge deal out of it in case they wanted to decline for whatever reason.  They were really touched and then we spent a lot of the dinner talking about the baby, etc.  I wouldn't have done it differently.
  • we want to ask my best friend to be LO's godmother.... and she lives in TX - we live in GA...  not quiet sure how to do that.
  • In our Native American traditions it's practice that the Godchildren take food to the Godparents on either Christmas or the feast of the three kings (Jan 6th) so my family and I decided that we will take the food on January 6th and ask them at that time to be my daughter's Godparetns.  I also, being a single mother, have decided that I will also ask them at that time that in the event something should happen to me that they would be the legal guardians of my daughter.....besides, I will have my daughter baptized a week or two after she is born. So I want them to have time to prepare for the baptism.
