I want to delay solids for as long as my milk will hold out. I read so many good things about it that I want to try. 12 months is my goal, but 9 months will be doable if needed. What do you think? opposite opinions are fine! I have no problems with parents who give their child solids!
Thanks
Re: anyone delaying solids?
This...although now I am curious about this solids thing...never heard of that before. I never second-guessed the pedi and I don't BF anymore, but I think if I EBF then I'd be interested in this.
With #1 I delayed until 7 months- but once she used a pincer grasp to remove food from my fork. fed herself, chewed/gummed, swallowed and happy danced for more, it was time. My twins started today at 5.5 months b/c they were showing serious readiness. There are many benefits to delay. Many many cultures feed BM only for 12-15 months. I think it's great, but if you were my IRL friend, I would ask you earnestly to be flexible and follow baby's cues.
kellymom.com has great info on delaying.
I didnt know you could do this either. Then I had a mommy meeting with my moms in my neighborhood. When I found this out, I did more research. IF a mom's milk can keep up, it will thicken and change for baby to get what he/she needs.
delaying solids can prevent allergies. DH had childhood allergies. Here is a link:

I have never heard of delaying solids for that long. Is there a particular reason why?
We plan on starting between 5-6 months. I can tell he is really interested in it now (almost 5 months)
I've read over and over again that all of a baby's nutritional needs are met by BM for the first 12 mos. and that - even after starting solids - BM should remain the main component of a baby's diet for the first year.
Having said that, my pedi recommended solids begining at 6 mos., although I never asked about delaying.
I completely agree. He acts interested when we eat, but I gave him a baby spoon and then he was content, making me think he is more interested in the objects. For NOW anyway.
And that's a perfect example of following cues. With all 3 of my kids, when their cues were loud, clear and unmistakable, it was so easy. They just knew what to do...Honestly I wanted to wait until 7-9 months with the twins to spite everyone who felt the need to tell me what they thought my kids needed. Plus, I hate pumping, but I use BM to thin out all foods. Oh well, the masters have spoken!
