Pregnant after a Loss

Question, ladies.

Please forgive me if this is a common question, but after a loss (mine was at 13 weeks), did they do anything different when you went to your first appointment getting pregnant again? It's been 7 months since my miscarriage/D&C. I am not sure when I got pregnant, but I am hoping for some reassurance seeing last time I only got an ultrasound after things went wrong... it makes me very nervous. Thanks all :)

Re: Question, ladies.

  • If you're unsure of your dates, you'd probaby get an ultrasound for dating purposes.

Other than that, it'll depend on your Dr.  Some will run betas, others won't.  I know that isn't helpfu, sorry.  I had betas run, but it was at my request.

  • Congrats on your new pregnancy.

I have a different doctor then I had with my first pregnancy, plus i'm living in Germany now, where ultrasounds at each appointment are common place.  My doctor ran betas, and wanted to see me each week early on.  I'm also on progesterone and magnesium supplements.

  • I had my m/c at 11 weeks back in May and got pregnant in September.  My doc checked my progesterone 3 times in the beginning, and with every monthly appointment he gives me an ultrasound right there in the office, just a quickie.  (Last time I had 1 u/s at 6w 5d) He told me to take it easy and thats about it.  It is very nerve racking isn't it?  I was so nervous the 1st 12 weeks, but once I passed the 12w mark I started to let myself get excited and stop worrying so much!  It's only natural, and I'm sure everything will be fine for you this time around!  Oh yeah, and congrats!
  • Congratulations on your new pregnancy!

With this pregnancy my doctor saw me at 6w or so to check for viability.  He wouldn't do beta's for me since as he said, "You have only had 1 m/c."  If you want beta's done to make sure your levels are rising you should try and ask for that.  Have you called your doctor yet?

    Good luck to you!

  • Congratulations on your pg!

I too lost my baby at 13+weeks.  I am so sorry, I know how hard it is.

I went in for an early blood draw to check my betas as soon as I got a pos test.  They then did a second draw 48 hours later.  I suggest you call your dr and get this done for dating purposes if you have not already.  Then they will probably do an early u/s around 6 weeks to check on your LO.  GL and I wish you a VERY happy and healthy 9 months!

  • Congrats on your BFP! My Dr didn't do anything different at my appt, but he did schedule my 1st appt for earlier than he normally would have. I went in for an early u/s at 6w 4d instead of the usual 10 weeks. Then I had a second u/s done at 10 w. GL!

  • First, congrats on the BFP!  My Dr. let me come in every 2 weeks during 1st tri for ultrasounds.  Some doctors don't do anything differently, and some are really understanding and accomodating.  It never hurts to ask for an early ultrasound.  I think women that have had a m/c deserve special treatment!  H&H 9 months!
  • While the doc didn't offer it, I requested beta and progesterone blood work right when I got my BFP. Good thing, because I found out I was low on progesterone -- which may have been the reason for my m/c. So they put me on Prometrium and it's been love sweet love for LO ever since.

  • Congrats on your BFP!!!

Like the others, I told my doctor at my m/c follow-up that I would be extra concerned about this pregnancy, and wanted to know what could be done EARLY to give me reassurance.  They did order betas (2 that were 48 hours apart, and then another 6 days later).  I had an early ultrasound today at 6w6d from LMP.

Definitely call your doctor and let your thoughts be known on how you're feeling and what they can do to help you feel comfortable.

  • Thanks all, I appreciate the comfort. I definitely will call tomorrow.
