Babies: 3 - 6 Months

solids...

So, I just called my pedi's office and the nurse said you "have to" start with rice cereal because it's easier on the stomach. Is this true? After doing some reading online, it seems that there's no nutritional value in feeding cereal and no real reason to give it first. What has your pedi said? What did you do when starting solids?

I think I'll call back tomorrow and ask my doctor to call me back. The nurse line always gives different advice than my doc. Annoying.

Re: solids...

  • I know lots of moms that skipped cereal all together and went straight for "real" food. I also know moms that skipped rice cereal and went for oatmeal instead.

  • My pedi said to just start with "real food". He explained the no nutritional value in cereal. We went straight to real food and my DD is doing great with it!
  • That's what my pedi said as well but I've heard the same as the PP said too.
  • I was told that the cereal is just for them to understand how to eat and swallow something a little thicker then Formula or Breastmilk.  I didnt always give it to Alex, I would mix it into the fruit
  • At your DS's age you can probably skip the cereal if you want.  My dr. said the cereal is pretty much just to teach them how to eat if you want to start right away at 4 months.

  • There are mixed opinions on this and I don't think there is really reliable research it support either. Our DR OK'd cereal only at 4 months, he said no other real foods until 6 months. We are going super slow and just gave cereal for the first time yesterday. I probably won't give much real food until 6 months or very close too. I think at your LOs age you will be safe with which ever you feel comfortable with!
