Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Opinions please: Are we creating a "bad habit?"

The 4 month wakeful is kicking our butts right now, and has been for the last 3 weeks.  DS will now only sleep if he is in our bed...thanks 4 month wakeful!!  I love bedsharing and DH doesn't mind it either, but I would like for DS to be able to sleep in his crib again at some point.  If anyone else has been through this, was it hard transitioning LO back to the crib after bedsharing?   TIA!!!

  • I bed share and we JUST started putting her in her crib and she does great, she goes right down

Mom, however, is having a much harder time separating. Crying

  • I'm waiting to see what responses you receive because we're going through the same thing. All of a sudden, she won't sleep in her arm reach, but want to sleep next to me. When she falls asleep next to me, I put her back in her arms reach co-sleeper but she wakes up almost immediately and starts to cry.
  • It could be difficult especially since after four months they are much more aware of what is going on, however, with that being said....so what.  Do what is best for your baby and your family.  The Baby Sleep Book by Dr. Sears gives good ideas about transitioning back into the crib.  I co sleep with my daughter still (i don't bedshare though).

This is us too!!  As soon as I put him down in his crib, he screams.  Even if I put him down asleep, he immediately wakes up and won't go back to sleep again until he is snuggled against someone.

  • It's only a problem if you don't want LO in your bed.
  • I think they are still pretty little for habits to form. We still occasionally bedshare but L always goes down in his at bedtime. He come sin our bed durign the night, in the beginning when we first started this transition (we bedhared for the first 7 weeks) we brougth him into our bed after his first waking and then we moved to the 2nd. Now he doesn't come into our bed till the morning (between 5 & 7 am). Maybe start with a transition to the crib if you are concerned? There are noghts when L is "off" and he still spends most of the night with us.

  • I don't think that it's creating a bad habit, but then we bedshare and have from the start.

  • We usually bedshare in the early morning (first BF feed of the day, if it's earlier than 6:30 a.m.), and I had the same concerns about setting bad, hard-to-break habits.  Our pedi said he's not worried about forming habits until around the 9 month timeframe.

  • I think it's pretty early to worry about bad habits.  It would probably only take a few days to break one.  I think DD is just getting over the wakeful (which I didn't really believe, but now I do!) and she was in our bed but only because it was easier for me to feed her there.  She's back in the crib now and doing great, fingers crossed.
  • We have the same problem!! Quin just started this the other night and I had no idea why.... and last night after three hours of the back and forth DH and I just put him in bed with us... he eventually was so exhausted that he was out and I was able to transfer him back to his pnp next to the bed, but maybe it's better to just leave him in bed with us?
