Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If your baby wears a helmet....

I am worried about the shape of DD's head. She has a flat spot in the back, with a bump in the middle and at the top left and top right it is kind of bumped up.

I asked her pedi about it once and she said there was a type of Dr that specialized in "heads" and their shape.

Did you seek out a Dr other than your pedi to have your LO's head checked or did your pedi refer you to someone?

Did you bring up your concerns with your LO's head with the pedi or did they notice the problem on their own? TIA!

  • I am going through this right now.  See my previous post for my story and don't let doctors blow you off.  Mommy knows best!

I am not sure about specialists but most babies that have a flat spot also have torticolis (tightening of the neck muscles) and should see a physical therapist.

  • I would call back and as for a referral to see a specialist or a PT. What the PP said is correct with flat heads typically going along with other issues and a PT would know.

GL! I lucked out with both of parents being PT's so it was nice to know that DD's flat head was not related to a torticollis (sp?) and that she just needed some repositioning of things to get her head back to normal

  • My son has been wearing a helmet for the past month and it has worked great! My husband actually noticed the flat side of his head and then we brought it up at the pedi. Pedi recommended we goto his orthodist but we went to this place called Cranial Tech. They are nationwide so possibly they might have one close to you. We went for a free evaluation and then got the helmet a week later. Cost was $3600 but my insurance is covering 90%. I was skeptical at first getting a helmet but didn't want LO to grow up with a flat head and me knowing I could've done something to fix it. The helmet never bothered him once. I'm very happy we decided on getting it for him.
