St. Anthony's hospital

Hello there,

We have a choice between St. Anthony's and St. John's hospitals for delivery.  Although I have read some people prefer not to use St. Anthony's, I've never heard any reasons why.  Any experiences?

Thanks!

I don't really see a problem with St. Anthony's. My sister had both her babies there just fine. I will tell you that my other sister did get really sick with her pregnancy. She developed preeclampsia and was sent to St. Anthony's. Her doctor had her transferred to St. John's for a specialist. So if there is an emergency or something its not too far away. My mother is insisting I go to St. John's to begin with though which is fine with me if it will keep her mind at ease.

For anyone considering St. Anthony's..I just had my baby girl December 6th, 2009 at St. Anthony Hospital. I was really impressed with the staff and service I received. I would recommend the hospital. I didn't want to go to St. John's because I had to take a tenant of mine there about a year ago and when we arrived they treated her as just another patient. She called ahead and they made her walk up to the maternity ward and they made her sign paperwork before even taking her to her room. I felt they may be experienced but having a baby is not something I do every day and I wanted to feel special. At St. Anthony's they took me up in a wheelchair and got me settled before hitting me up with insurance papers. St. John's has more specialist so if you have issues then maybe choose St. John's. I was 42 and having my first child. Even though I was older,  I had the perfect pregnancy so I felt comfortable not being surrounded by specialists. St. Anthony's has specialist too. But I have an excellent doctor and felt totally confident in the nursing staff I had.  Sorry so long but I feel stongly about St. Anthony's since I just went there and felt they sometimes get a bad rep. My advice is check out both hospitals and only take advice from people who have had babies at either hospital not from people who are going by hearsay.  Also I loved my newborn photos. They use a company called Bella Baby Photography and our photos turned out like a professional photo shoot with my husband, baby and me.

I had my daughter at st anthonys in june of 2008, i LOVED it. i ended up going in 2 weeks early thinking my water had broke, it hadnt. however they did extra tests to check the fluid levels and they made me feel very comfortable and answered all of my questions and helped to calm me down when i got nervous. it was my first baby and i was only 21 so i was kinda nervous. I ended up with a c-section and the nurses always came the minute i needed something i never had to wait for anything. i am going back on January 22nd to have my 2nd little girl, i debated on going to the new St. Clare hospital in fenton or st johns but decided the one hospital was too new and more people were going there and the nurses didnt always come right away, and st johns is more of a high risk childbirth center. adn if you dont have high risk you can be put to the side to take care of some one else. I STRONGLY recommend St. ANthonys!! I loved them!

I had the choice of St. John's or St. Anthony's.  I did St. Anthony's with both kids and loved it.  With DD I was in the hospital 3 times while pregnant.  The first time I was about 22 weeks.  L&D typically doesn't take you with issues before 24 weeks, you go to the ER.  Well, I came in and they had a bed in L&D so they took me.  I don't think that would have happened at St. John's.  I was also in 2 other times for complications before DD was born.  I was induced with DD.  My L&D nurse was amazing, it was a slow night/day and she sat with us and chatted.  She was so nice.  I asked for her for the birth of DS who was also supposed to be an induction.  My BP went up, OB said I could wait till the next morning to induce since I had a 15 month at home and needed to finish getting things together.  OB called the L&D nurse and she changed her schedule to come in on her day off so she could do my delivery.  Well, I went into labor during the night and DS came FAST!!!  I showed up at the hospital, was 9cm and my water burst within minutes of getting in the room.  It was too late for and epi.  I was scared to death, I wanted my nice drugs like with DD.  The nurses were amazing, coached me through the whole thing.  DS was born 45 minutes after we got there.  I wound up signing all my consent forms and releases AFTER DS was born.  The aftercare nurses are also great, but those L&D nurses really are amazing.

So, long story short, I would not hesitate to go to St. Anthony's.

Thanks, everyone, for providing your reviews of St. A's. I live in S. City and will most likely go there because my doc's offices are on that campus. We toured the hospital as part of an early pregnancy class a few months ago (when I was pregnant with one I ended up miscarrying). It seemed like they had everything you'd need (nice L&D rooms, NICU, etc.), and with their new pediatric ER in partnership with Cardinal Glennon, it seems that child/infant care is an area they are really looking to grow their reputation in. I'm glad to hear my impressions were correct and that you all great experiences there.

I don't have any experience with St Anthony's because I delivered at St John's but I wouldn't consider delivering anywhere else. The physicians there are phenomenal and if you run into any issues, they have every specialist you'd need, a level III NICU, great rooms, free wi-fi, good food, competent caring nurses, etc. I went in to L&D at 17w with bleeding and I was able to go directly to L&D, didn't have to step foot in the ER, so not sure why pp thought you have to go to the ER. My OB told me that things don't often go wrong with OB but when they do, they usually go downhill quickly so you want to be in the best place (in his opinion St John's and he delivers at 3 hospitals) I had a terrific experience there and would recommend it to anyone.

I had originally chose to MoBap but unexpectedly went in to labor and BARELY made it to St Anthony's (we live south) My OB recommended MoBAP over ST Johns, assuming there were no perceived complications.  Her feelings (She delivered at all 3) that St. Johns was very busy and some moms felt they don't get the care they are looking for. That being said my SIL had her 2 babies at St. Anthony's and me with mine last Feb. and it was just fine. Our room was small and not the most comfy but the care we got was wonderful.
