ear tubes, here we come :-(

we finally had out appt with the ENT today and he said there is no doubt that Warner needs tubes in his ears. I'm thrilled that there is something that can (hopefully) fix these never ending ear infections and I hope the little guy will feel better, get his full hearing back, etc. but I'm nervous as hell about him being anesthetized and having surgery. (although, reading success stories on this board is very reassuring!!!) I know this is a very good thing for him, but I can't help but be nervous.

I've got to call tomorrow to schedule the procedure. Our doctor is Dr. Mushtaq in McLean. He said that he can operate at either Fairfax hospital or Reston. Anyone ever been to this doctor? And any recommendations for or against either hospital? I've never been to Fairfax and all I know about Reston is that a few friends have delivered there and liked it.

Re: ear tubes, here we come :-(

  • We are also well on our way to an ENT, but hoping that things improve soon so we can avoid the tubes.

I dont' know anything about the doctor, but I had a major surgery at INOVA Fairfax and feel that it is a top-notch facility.  Fairfax is one of the premier hospitals in the area and has some of the best specialists around. There children's hospital is also amazing, so in case your LO did need more extensive care, he would be in good hands.  My friend's daughter was diagnosed with a heart condition at 1 month and she was transferred from Fair Oaks Hospital to Fairfax because the care was much better there.  I don't know anything about Reston, though.

  • A friends daughter (who has a bunch of health issues) went to Fairfax for tubes. ?She was pleased with the outcome. ?
Personally - I haven't heard anything good about Reston...But I think it depends on who you ask.

  • I'm so glad you are on your way to getting everything fixed as well. If you want to chat about it, feel free to send me a private message and I'll pass along my information. Seriously, DD was out of our arms for only 6 minutes between the anesthesiologist taking her and going to hold her as she woke up. It was amazing. That day she took nice naps but was totally herself and we wouldn't have known she just had surgery. She just had another cold and it didn't turn into an ear infection, which is so new for us. I hope Warner has the same success.

  • I think ear tubes will really help out Warner, good luck!

I had a perfectly good experience delivering at Reston.

I'm curious what the poster who said she didn't hear anything good about Reston did hear....

  • Oh no, I'm sorry!  :(  I know it's scary, but from everything I have read, it's a fairly simple procedure, and he will be a happy, healthy boy afterward!

  • Not ear tubes, but if you gives you some additional reassurance, my son had hernia surgery at 4 months old at Fairfax and did great.  The staff was wonderful, they let me carry him into the OR, and everything went so smoothly.  He had to fast before the surgery (I think it was 6 hours?),which I was worried about, but he did absolutely fine (we just woke him to feed him when he could last eat).

Good luck and so glad he'll have a resolution to the ear infections.

It may be different for every hospital, but at Children's, below 12 months, you can't accompany into the ER. It was tough handing her over to the anesthesiologist, but they took great care of her. I just wanted to let you know in case the rule is the same at Fairfax too not to expect to go in with him.

From personal expereince I will say that I delivered DD at Reston, have been to the ER too many times to count, and had surgery when I broke my foot. All were very good experiences...even billing hasn't been an issue!!

  • No advice about hospitals but hopefully some reassurance. The surgery is so fast and easy. He won't be under heavy sedation, they just give him some gas and the whole procedure is less than 5 minutes. DS got tubes in October and we've been ear infection free every since. He was cranky coming out of surgery but by the time we got home, you'd never have known he had surgery that day. See if you can schedule the surgery early because they can't eat after midnight. Good luck!

  • I hope they help - my nephew got tubes and it made a huge difference - a definite success story.

My DD #1 never got so much as even a cold until she was 1 year old (and she went into daycare at 10 weeks old - I say that because I always feel like nurses at our ped office say "is she in daycare?" like that's the reason babies get sick). But #2 has had three ear infections already and she's only 10 months.  I have no idea what the road to tubes is, but I feel like we're sort of on it already...
