Pregnant after a Loss

Well crap.... Beta hell begins

I have been having awesome betas so far.  They have been more than doubling every single time... until now.  In 46 hours it went from 1523 to 2630.  My RE called and wants to do an ultrasound tomorrow morning to make sure everything is ok before they close for the new year holiday.  I am upset, and pretty sure something is wrong.  Sigh, I just want to have a normal, text book pregnancy.... why is that so hard??

Did anyone else's betas not double, and things work out?

  • Geez...it was pretty close to doubling, and it wasn't a full 48 hours!  I'm surprised they are concerned.  Look at it this way...everything is probably fine, and now you are going to get an early u/s for reassurance!  I'll be thinking of you, but I'm sure everything is fine!

  • I don't think betas double that quickly once you're past 1,000 - in fact they slow even before that, I believe.

    Here's a link for more info -

Hang in there, your numbers are nice and high!

  • Don't make yourself crazy. I have heard slow rising betas stories that have been a sucess. Plus it was not that off. Good luck, thinking of you.
  • I agree with Ibis - I was told that the doubling rate slows once you hit 1000. You almost doubled, and are still definitely increasing - you're in good shape.

You'll be just fine! Good luck at your appointment!

  • Ibis is right, they can dramatically slow down after reaching 1000... my peri said anything after 800 they dont expect to fully double in the 48 hours.

I am sure your Dr just wants to ease thier mind and yours and get you checked out before they close up shop for a few days.  Enjoy your u/s, you will see a healthy baby in there!

  • My betas didn't quite double (1147 to 2100) in 48 hours. My dr. told me that as long as they go up by 60%(ish) that's normal. They actually look for doubling between 48 to 72 hours.
  • I've also heard that it's 46-72 hours & you were dang close.  Breathe in & out.  Everything's probably just fine.

  • Just like pp said, those are really good numbers, and sometimes they won't quite double within 48 hours.  I have heard that some people double in 72 hours instead.  I really wouldn't be worried about that.  I think your little one is growing just perfectly in there!  Let us know how it goes, and try not to worry too much.  I'll be thinking of you.

  • Wow... my Re never said that it slows down.  He just said he wanted to make sure everything is OK before the holiday since it didn't double.  I am so nervous about tomorrow now.  The good thing is that DH will get to go...  I hope tomorrow morning gets here fast.

  • I've seen the 60% increase rule in a number of places.  I think you'll be fine - just enjoy the chance to sneak a peak at your LO.

  • My betas had a doubling time of 62 hours between the 2nd and 3rd and my OB wasn't concerned at all. I went back up to 49 hours between 3rd and 4th. I go tomorrow for my 1st appointment, bit so far so good. Good luck, and hopefully it's just an excuse to see your LO a little early.

  • THIS!!!!!!!!!!  I've heard/read about the 60% rule everywhere......please don't worry too much....the fact that they are so high and are still rising (and very close to doubling) is great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Me, too.... me, too!!!  My m/w said 66% is considered standard now, but that a lot of women use doubling for the easiness of the math.  So, when mine DID double between the first and second, that was way better than great!  And, YES, I've heard that the numbers do slow down as you get farther along.  No worries, Andrea....lots of thoughts and prayers for you, and tomorrow morning, you're going to see your baby!!

  • Beta time is hell! Everyone's is different and every OB/RE say something different. Good luck tomorrow and be sure to post.
  • I agree with the PP that your numbers look great.

((Hugs)) and lots of good thoughts and prayers for an awesome u/s.

  • Aww. I don't think anything is wrong. They always say its 48-72 hours. Since it was so close I'm sure everything is fine! Take comfort in the fact that you will have some answers before the holiday and that they aren't making you wait!

  • My midwife told me she refuses to do the "doubling betas" as standard practice (she'll do it if you want) b/c she's had so many clients come in and have rising, but not doubling, betas and freak out. They then end up having completely healthy babies.

I C&P a chart below, Your numbers are fine. Try your best not to worry too much. I don't think you have anything to worry about!

I can take up to 96 hours for betas to double, according to the second chart. STOP WORRYING MOM! Wink
