Question about airplane ticket costs

Why is flying:

Here -> IAD -> PVD

less than

Here -> IAD

?

Same dates, same airline.  Makes no freaking sense at all.

    Direct flights are always more expensive because people are willing to pay more for them.

    Because of the layover= less desirable and chances are that IAD is a Hub of the airline. It's always cheaper from Hubs.

    I also love trying to fly to florida from d.c but the layover takes you to NYC.

    Whaaat?  So I'm guessing it's not allowed for me to buy the cheaper ticket to Providence and just get off in DC.  I think I tried that once and they voided my return trip because I missed a leg.  So ridiculous.
