We have decided to start doing IUIs with injectables and donor sperm. I turn 40 in Jan. and we plan to do IUI #1 in Feb. I honestly dont have much hope - RE says success rates are around 15-17%. Originally I thought she said success rate was 5-7% so I guess I should be much happier with the increased odds. I do have insurance coverage for up to 3 IUIs. Probably wont do more than 3. Our clinic requires a counseling session with a therapist before using donor sperm. We are going to set that up and then start "shopping" for some swimmers. Here is your fun fact for the day: sperm from taller donors costs more than sperm from short guys. For real, I swear I am not making that up! Sperm from donors who are more desirable (ie tall, attractive, highly educated, etc.) costs more.
Isnt it funny the paths life takes us? I never thought that I would be using the internet to shop for other men's jism (sp?).
Re: Our TTC plan for 2010
That's hysterical that tall men's sperm cost more than short men's. I guess sperm banks will do whatever they can to get more money!
Good luck. IUI didn't work for me but I have 4 friends for whom it did work so whatever the odds- it does work. 3 of my friends were 38-42 so they were in the same age range as you.
Keep positive and have fun shopping! I'll be looking for your updates as your shopping progesses!

So glad that you have a plan!
That is crazy that there are price differences for sperm. Who knew?! Don't feel like you have to answer this, but I am kind of curious, what does sperm cost these days?
Im so glad to see you back in action! So for a few hundred ( Im guessing?) extra you could get sperm from a tall good looking surgeon perhaps? sounds like a good investment to me! Looking forward to good news from you soon : )
You ladies laugh, but in college I shared an apartment with this guy that donated so much sperm, he had to file taxes on the money he made. He was getting his masters at Georgia Tech, over 6', thin, blond hair and blue eyes. Everything that appears great on paper and recessive genes.
There is even a sperm bank of Dutch men. Again, tall, recessive genes.
Good luck!
I wondered the same thing! One of the sperm banks has an online section called "staff impressions". This is where the ladies who work at the bank talk about the donor. They say things like "he has such beautiful eyes, is so kind and polite, he looks like George Clooney, etc. etc. It is really funny to read them.
I think I would like to work in a sperm bank and "grade" men all day long. I would say something like this to all the guys: Here is your cup and some porn, now go make some wonderful jism to help a nice couple make a baby. Handling sperm all day sounds a lot easier than my job. Maybe they even offer employee discounts
OMG! I now have a mental picture of cereal boxes filled with frozen sperm. The grocery store will never quite feel the same to me.
LMAO!
It'll work MrsKario.. I'm so glad you guys are doing IUI.. I just turned 40 a week ago.. it's the new 30.. and alot of girls on this board are right over & it's working.. it'll work for us!!
Good LUCK
I'm so happy your doing IUI's, MrsK. It's good to see you back on the board, I've been thinking about you.
That's amazing that the tall, attractive, educated sperm are more expensive. I wonder if the donor gets more money for his donation??
Premium package! LOL!!
I had no idea if a vial cost $20 or $2000.
I don't usually post here but lurk from time to time to check up on some girls who also visit IF.
Anyway, we are moving forward with DS as well and I just did my second IUI. If you have any questions about DS or just want some support feel free to come over to IF and page me. It can be emotional and bittersweet and also hard on DH.
Anyway, GL and I hope IUI#1 does the trick. I can also rec a few books on using donors if you want.

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.
