Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If your LO struggled to take a bottle...

What did you do?  DD will only nurse and every time we try to introduce a bottle, she cries and refuses it.  I have tried multiple bottles and nipples, frozen milk, fresh milk... Yesterday we tried putting the milk in a sippy cup and she still didn't take it.  (This is breastmilk not cow's milk)

We are going on vacation with my parents and I would REALLY like to be able to let them baby-sit for us for more than 3 hours (there is an early morning excursion that will be approximately 5 hours long that we would like to go on).

Any advice?  We have about two weeks until we leave... TIA!!

  • Have you tried latex nipples vs. silicone?

  • YES! I've been there with Jackson! Has she started on solids yet? It took that for him to figure out that a bottle was just food. Now he takes it like a champ, but the milk has to be good and hot and we've tried every bottle under the sun. The one he finally took was the breast flow brand. Good luck!

Yes, we actually have a special bottle that is one-piece made of silicone.  I borrow it from my SIL but still no luck... DD just shakes her head from side to side when we give it to her.

  • They also say to try another person (not mom) to give her the bottle, maybe you not even in the room or not even home.

We just started food last week and I think she's starting to get it but it takes some time to coax her into opening her mouth.  We've tried rice and oatmeal and then moved onto veggies but she didn't like them so we're going to still with oatmeal by itself for another few days... Did Jackson shake his head back and forth when he was rejecting the bottle?

  • I had the hardest time getting DS to take a bottle.  I had to get him a special bottle with the wide breast like nipple (The first years Breast Flow bottle).  He would still refuse it until I figured out that he likes his milk WARM...if no on the hot side!!  I would try different bottles, be persistent, try different temperatures, try different people feeding her...if you feed her she may expect the breast, oh and be persistent.  When I was trying to get DS to take a bottle I would give him one a day right before bed when I knew he would want to nurse/eat. Just keep at it...you could probably try different sippy cups too.  When I transition DD to a sippy cup she really liked the Nuby soft nozzle ones (super cheap) that were more bottle like, or I know a lot of kids like the straw type ones.  It's all about trial and error.  GL!
  • DD wouldn't take a bottle either, and I finally splurged and got the Adiri nurser bottle.  It's $13 for one, but was worth it to be able to leave her for extended periods of time.  I got it at Target, and a lot of places online sell them too.

We had a hell of a time getting E to take a bottle.  It turned out I had an excess lipase issue that was causing my milk to go bad really fast (I smelled it and it smelled really strong, like formula, which is what tipped me off after 2 months of struggling and trying every bottle on the market!).  Even after that, she'll only take the Adiri bottle, so I recommend it, too.

We stopped using frozen milk because I think I had excess lipase as well - it smelled really strong.  The other day I pumped and gave it to DD the next day... do you think it might have turned that quickly?  I'm just wondering how close to giving the bottle I should pump.  Thanks for the info/advice!
