Pregnant after a Loss

Waterbirth??

I never considered doing a waterbirth, but after watching "The Business of Being Born", I started to think about it. I've done a little research and it seems better and better to me. Is anyone else doing a waterbirth and have any advice or information for me? Any good websites to visit?

Re: Waterbirth??

  • I'm considering a water birth as well - but I haven't given birth yet. Maybe ask on the PAL board?

  • Not me, but it's just not our style. I'm not knocking it; I think it's a great method for some people. It seems that one of the main issues is that birth is just so unpredictable that if you have a birth that doesn't require any type of intervention and you have a helpful coach, then it could go great. You just have to be flexible. For example, I had to go on pitocin w/ DD after my water broke but then contrx stopped, and I know you can't do a water birth if you're on IVs or have an epidural.

So, just something to think about, but I also think anyone has to go into the birthing experience w/ an open/flexible mind anyway. GL- I'm sure it could be an amazing experience!

  • I've been very interested in it, but it's not allowed in NY (although if you have a cooperative nurse/midwife they may let you stay in the bath a bit longer than approved). I'd probably check with your OB's office to see what the guidelines are in your area.

  • I wanted to have a waterbirth for a while now, and then saw the Business of Being Born, and definitely wanted one... Talked with my OB about it, and I'm going to (eventually, I hope) end up in the "birth place" at the hospital - with the tubs and everything. But look into it and ask your doctor, because mine said that none of the doctors actually go there, just the midwives. I'm switching to one of the midwives in their practice.

     Good luck!

  • I'm doing waterbirth.  We're doing a homebirth and using a birth pool.  I am super-psyched about it.  I know the Sears books talk quite a bit about waterbirth.  I really wanted one with DS but none of the hospitals did them.  You should definitely check that where you are delivering allows it first, a lot of them don't anymore :(
  • Most hospitals aren't adopting that practice yet, just fyi. So you'd have to check with your hospital and OB to see if they will do it!
