XP: Moms that breastfeed babies with Teeth...

What do you do when your LO bites you? Or if it scrapes against their teeth? My DS has 2 teeth on bottom and 2 on top and he has never tried to bite me until this week. He is not really biting down hard more like scraping it against his teeth and boy does it hurt!! What in the world do you do about this. I am really not ready to stop, but I don't know if I can keep this up either. It really hurts when I go to work and have to pump now, they are pretty sore. Any advice?? Thanks!

  • I don't really have experience with that yet, DD's teeth haven't come in. But I would think a nipple shield would help.

  • I tell her no and take her off the boob for a little while. She has learned not to bite!

  • DS has 6 teeth (early teether!). He does scrape sometimes but it doesn't bother me much. He only bites when he is playing and not nursing anyway. I say "NO" firmly and remove him from the breast. This should teach him that biting = no more booby. Some people will tell you to yelp or say "OUCH!" but some babies find that funny ;)

  • DS has 4 teeth on bottom and 4 teeth on top.  I just tell him "Ow!" and "That hurts Momma!"  Then I re-position him.  It def isn't like it was pre-teeth and it pinches a little, but my breasts got used to it after a while.  DS also has learned how to position his mouth with his new teeth....

    not looking forward to this

  • DD has only 2 bottom teeth but when they 1st came in my nipples got raw like when I first started nursing, but not as bad. I read that if they do bite to yell "ouch" or whatever you choose to startle to the baby and to let them know it hurts. DD has only bit me twice. Now nursing is fine.
  • I gasp (involuntarily) and take him off (that's almost involuntary, too).  After he got his bottom teeth in, it took him about a week to stop completely biting.  Then he got a top tooth in and started biting again, but it only took a couple of days for him to stop.  I don't think he means it, his mouth is just different and it takes some getting used to.
  • K only has two bottom teeth and I tried the whole pulling him off and saying no biting when he bit (only in the beginning) but that only made him more frustrated.  What worked for me was saying "let me see your tongue", and waiting to let him latch on until I saw his tongue.   He now only bites at the end if I am not paying attention to the fact that he is done eating...

  • I yell "ow!" but then she just laughs at me.?
  • I keep a very serious face and say "Ow! No biting". That usually does it. Once it was very sudden and REALLY painful and I couldn't stop myself from yelling "Ow, motherf*cker!" He cried then and really hasn't bitten much sense.

  • I sharply say, "NO!"  I feel bad doing this, once it made him cry.  But it works!  He's only bitten me three times total.  He's had teeth for about a month now.
