Pregnant after a Loss

If one more doctor rolls their eyes

when i say "i'm seeing a midwife" i'm going to scream.

I would really like to say "I can call my midwife at midnight and ask her a question, if you think you're so great, what's your number. I'll be calling you soon".

Dumb doctors.

  • That seems really disrespectful!  Which doctors are doing this?  The practice we are using has both OBs and midwives, and I "graduated" to a midwife once my pregnancy was considered low-risk.  Most midwifes are MORE knowledgeable than OBs about low-risk pregnancy and childbirth practices!

  • It was when I was at the ER, every.single.person. (well doctor) rolled their eyes at me and LAUGHED a little. Whatever. They're totally regulated in Florida, it's not like some random woman is going to be sticking her hand up my vag. Ugh.

  • That is soooo disrespectful!! So effing what if you want to decide to use a midwife?! That is YOUR decision.

Exactly.  It's not like there aren't enough pregnant 15 year olds to keep the doctors in business. Geesh!

  • The practice I go to encourages the use of midwives (as do most of the practices in this county).  The only time an OB is used is in the case of patient request, high-risk, or other maternal/fetal issues.  I'm perfectly happy using a midwife.  It doesn't mean you're getting any less care, and in fact, as pp stated, sometimes more care.  :-)

So how did the ER visit go today??

  • The doctors rolled their eyes, my in-laws flipped.  Although I did get my revenge on an ER doctor.  I had morning sickness bad enough that I ended up getting sent to the ER for dehydration on Christmas day ( a few years ago).  The doctor told me my midwife didn't know what she was talking about because she was a midwife, and that he knew it was all in my head.  I asked him how many kids he had, and he said he had one.  I came right back with, "Let me guess- you're such a *** about the whole thing that your wife refused to have more?"  That shut him up and I had medication for the nausea 15 minutes later.  I usually don't like getting nasty, but I found it really hard to feel guilty...

  • Please do. I agree with you. If I could have the personal care of a midwife, I would! Plus I hate my practice but they're the only ones who have delivery privileges at the hospital in town!

  • Amen.  Those doctors are the exact reason I am seeing a MW!

  • My MIL rolled her eyes and told someone I was seeing a MW at our Christmas party last night.  DH was all over it and then spent an hour telling that person why MWs are awesome...love him.  I totally feel your pain.  My MIL keeps saying I just wish you were seeing a doctor, I worry you aren't getting what you need.  Really?  because my midwife will spend up to an hour and a half a visit with me, and my OB never saw me for an hour and a half my whole pregnancy with James.  I think I'll be just fine.
  • I ended up seeing 2 of the other OBs in my OBs practice, and HATED them both, such complete a$$e$...

So I finally saw my OB to talk after the 2 MCs, and I talked with him about switching to a MW. He told me that there are 4 MWs in his practice, all awesome, and that he often goes to them when he has a question about a pg. Completely agreed when I said I wanted a MW, and said that IF I wanted to see him once in a while, that'd be fine, too.

AND, can only deliver in the "birth place" with a MW, the OBs don't deliver there. Won me over!
