Abby's Lane also has free shipping, so they're a good place to buy online. I bought our entire stash online, just shopping sales and reading reviews (you can find info on both at diaperpin.com) and had good luck re-selling things I don't like on Craig's List.
Abby's Lane is great! If you want to touch and feel them, definitely go to one of the Cloth Diaper 101 sessions, I think they're once a month. Where in DC Metro are you? I have quite a large stash with lots of variety and would be happy to show you if you're close.
