Last week, the sweet woman who works as a library aide had noticed that one of my students, M, didn't have any boots. I had been asking him if he was going to get some, and he said his mom didn't have any money for them. He walks to and from school, so she asked me if she should buy him some. So I told her to go for it.
When he came to school on Friday (late, of course), I asked him if he had noticed the boots that were sitting in his cubby, and said, "Yeah, they're not mine." and I told him they were, because they had his name in them, and that the Boot Fairy must have dropped them off for him. He was SO excited. I said, "Look, they're blue, just like your coat!" and he said, "I love blue!" This was all happening right before recess, so he started putting on his snowpants. Then I gave him his jacket, and he said he had to put the boots on first to make sure they fit. I showed him how he could pull the bungee cord tighter so snow wouldn't get in them, and he loved that.
So, I told him that we should probably write a thank you letter to the Boot Fairy, and he agreed (we haven't gotten a chance to do it yet though--and he keeps reminding me!).
Today I asked him what his mom said when he showed her his new boots, and he said that she told him there's no such thing as the Boot Fairy, but he still believes there is. Way to have an imagination, mom.
I love this kid.
