Pregnant after a Loss

Ultrasound for Viability at 5 weeks 2 days

So I got my BFP on Friday (12/18) and called my OB this morning to make an appointment. Well they want to see me before I go out of town for Christmas on Thurs.  So they made me an appointment for Thurs morning.  Then they called back to schedule an ultrasound for viability on Wed.  I am glad that they are checking things out early, but I also wonder what can actually be seen on a ultrasound at 5 weeks.  Have any of you girls had an ultrasound this early?

  • Congrats on your BFP! I have had an early ultrasound (two before I was 6 weeks), mostly to just confirm a sac and that it was intrauterine. Depending on the equipment used, the tech or dr. might be able to see something blobby in the sac. It'll be too early to see a hb but you can get some reassurance that the pregnancy is where it belongs. GL!

  • I did :).  They won't see much, so don't get too worried if there is not much to see...likely sac and yolk.  Maybe fetal pole, maybe not.
  • You won't see much I think when I went I just saw a sac and that was it and freaked out that it was a blighted ovum so just be prepared. Good luck and congrats
  • I can honestly tell you that you will see pretty much nothing at 5w. I had an U/S at 5 weeks with this pregnancy and my last and they will just be able to see a gestational sack, probably not a yolk sack yet. I'm really surprised that they called it a viability u/s. Usually, those aren't done till around 8w.
