Do you light candles with your DC around?

I do and my SIL freaked out over it. I keep one on my dining room table, 1 on each of my endtables and 1 over my fireplace.

DD has never even thought about touching it. We did explain to her that it's hot and it will give her a boo boo. My SIL told my mom on me about it too. lol.

  • Only a kitchen candle that is up where he can't reach without a stool.

I don't do them on our endtables, etc. just because DS is a wrecking machine. When he is playing he doesn't pay attention and crashes into things - open flame is not a smart idea around him.

  • Yes, we just put them out of reach (ie: on the kitchen counter, on top of our tall dresser, on top of the shelves, etc.)
  • Loading the player...
  • I have light candles in all rooms except his bedroom and toy room.

  • I don't. I'm paranoid about that stuff anyway. I use this: https://www.scentsy.net/

    specifically this one: https://www.scentsy.net/productgallery/warmers.html

I have one in the kitchen, so it's high enough that DS can't reach it and it smells up the whole upstairs.

  • Yes, but only up on wall shelves, or on top of the piano.

    DS can reach everything else.

  • Sure, just not on the coffee table. End tables, dressers, mantle, dining room table...

DS learned at church that candles are owies. He hasn't touched one since. DD is pretty smart and understands no.

  • yup, as long as they're not anywhere he can get to them. He has an obsession with blowing out candles, so everytime he sees one, he says "happy buttday happy buttday" until we sing happy birthday and let him blow it out

  • We light them here too but only in certain places. I have a tart warmer on top of the stove, and sometimes I move that to the kitchen island. We have 2 candles on the mantle too...those are really the only places that I know the kids can't get them so those are the only places I feel comfortable lighting them when the kids are home.

  • Yes, but dd is well trained regarding fire.  We have a wood stove insert in the fireplace, and she had to know not to go near it.

I have never had to childproof anything in my house though.  She is good about not touching things if we tell her they are dangerous.

  • No.  I don't do candles.  I don't think they are safe.  As much as I can find out, about 2,000 house fires are started each year by candles.  though that is not a lot on a % basis, not worth it to me.
  • Occasionally, but only in a spot where she can't reach it, even with a stool, and even then it's not on for long. I'm not worried about her purposefully touching it. I'm worried about accidentally knocking it over, etc.

  • No. I use the same thing as Ami. I have two upstairs, a plugin in all my bathrooms and one downstairs. I LOVE them. They end up being less expensive than a nice candle (one bar has as much scent as a large yankee jar candle and its only $5) and the wax melts at a very low temp. They just use a light bulb, so if I forget to turn it off, there isn't any more risk than leaving a lamp on.
