Pregnant after a Loss

Do you plan on making your own baby food?

Saw this question on another board and figured it'd be a good one to talk about here....

What do you think? Will you make your own?

(Don't flame me) but I don't think right now that I will... I feel like it's one of those things maybe kind of like breastfeeding that you really need to want to do it or it could become a big job. (Yes, I plan on breastfeeding)  I have two friends now that cook, puree, freeze all of their baby's food in little freezer trays, etc. They say it can be pretty time consuming and they are both stay at home moms. So I wonder how I would/will manage it if I decide to try it? What do you think?

Re: Do you plan on making your own baby food?

  • I will probably make some... but just the easy ones like mac and cheese and squash.. stuff like that.

  • I plan to give it a shot.  If it really becomes too much work I'll look into other options.  I have a friend who does it and she works full time.  She says it only takes her about 45 minutes on Sunday to make food for the week.

Only time will tell I guess...

  • I plan on making my own.  I'm not opposed to buying it and I probably will buy it from time to time for when we're going to be out or something.  I've heard it's not that hard to make and I know my mom made all my baby food and said it wasn't hard.  I'm sure it is time consuming though.  I will be a SAHM though so maybe that will make it easier for me to make it.

This website has a lot of great info: https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/

  • I probably will for a lot of it but I am going to be a SAHM. If I was working, I'd probably just buy organic jar food.

  • I will try. I am very concerned with what we put in our bodies and I want to make sure the most natural things are going in. We registered for a table food grinder and I believe that will make eating out much easier. A friend of mine will spend a few hours on Sunday and that is about it.

I tasted some jarred bananas and it just didn't taste the same and it didn't seem like mashing a banana would have been that much work. I think that if you give the real stuff the child will be more likely to eat better as they grow.

Maybe start tasting some food before making your decision.

  • I am planning on it, or at least planning on giving it a good shot.  i have read a couple of really good books about it already and I dint think it will be too much trouble for me to do it weekly.  I think its a great thing to try to do adn saves a ton of money.

Now I am sure i will also be buying some good quality organics down the road at some point... I just dont know when or how much yet.

  • Yes.  My parents made our baby food - but it's a lot simpler than some people make it.

Whatever the family is having for dinner, baby gets.  If it's chicken, broccoli and rice for dinner, all 3 get tossed in the food processor and baby has what everyone has for dinner.  Leftovers become extra meals that you can freeze/store etc.  Breakfast is cream of rice, scrambled eggs, applesauce, whatever.

For additional/extra meals, we'll buy baby food.  But overall, it's cheaper, easier and simpler to make it while you're making the other meals.

  • I made food in the beginning for DS, but he was/is a really picky eater, and lots of food wasn't getting eaten, so I went with jar food so I wasn't out as much $$ and time. I do still make homemade apple sauce every fall.

  • I might do some. I read that it can stay good in the freezer for a month or two, so if I spend one weekend at the beginning of each month and just do that, I think it could work. We'll see when the time actually comes though!

  • I'll be a working mom, so it might be too timely, but I will definitely give it a try, or at least mix it up. Williams-Sonoma has a nifty looking baby food maker that I may use.

    This.

  • I'm going to give it a shot.  My mom made our baby food, she basically made extra of whatever they had for dinner (unseasoned) and turned it into baby food.   I won't buy the baby food maker though, I have a food processer that will work just fine.  I'll freeze it in ice cube trays.  I'm also not opposed to buying some jars as fill in for when I do fall behind.
  • I'd like to give it a shot. I plan om breastfeeding and have been reading up on that recently, and I haven't really investigated making my own baby food yet. I did register for a food mill in hopes that I can at least make some of it. I will be going back to work when Eliana will be 5 1/2 months old, so time will also be a factor. We'll see. I'd like to, but if it doesn't work out, that's ok w/ me too.
  • I am really interested in trying it out, but I won't be heartbroken if it doesn't workout.
  • DH wants to try. I'm sure we will still buy some as well though.

  • I did it for DD, and hope I will have the time to for this one too.  It was not difficult and I was very proud of myself for doing it.  I did buy some jars for on the go and once she started on meats, I couldn't get them to puree smooth enough.
  • I'm going to be working at home for my dad's company, so my hours will be pretty flexible.  I'm not saying I will make all of her food, but I would like to try and make some.  I grew up with jarred baby food and I am fine.  But my husband and I try to eat healthy with lots of organic fruits and veggies, so I would like to incorporate that into her diet.

I remember my mom doing this for my sister when she was little, and I plan to do the same.  I never thought of it as "making your own food" though.  I just thought that's how you were supposed to feed a baby!

  • well with ethan I worked outside the home and it was really easy.  I didn't do it all the time, and we used the prepackaged stuff on outings, trips etc. but whenever we had a home dinner, then I would throw in stuff that we were eating into a puree machine (cheap one from walmart) add breast milk and it would blend everything together and he would eat what we were having.  It was so easy.

  • We will... but only cause DH wants to do and he does the cooking... so I"m all about him doing something integral to keeping her alive as I am the milk fairy:)
