Babies on the Brain

Anybody got a spare kidney?

I just calculated how much the hardwood floors for our new master suite would cost if we got the (gorgeous, 6" wide reclaimed walnut) flooring that I want.

$3,124.78.

That's just the darn boards.

  • No extra kidney, but can I interest you in a 3rd nipple?

  • I used to work for a hardwood floor company.  I have a website suggestion for you if you're interested, but I don't want to come off looking like a vendor.

  • Suggest away!! We have a 400 sq. foot basement and a 250 sq. ft. 4th-floor-turned-master-suite that both will need flooring.

  • They were our customers when I worked there and it's a great little company out of SF.  Their website is simplefloors.com, this is the Reclamation line they have.  It's gorgeous:

I know they had plans at one time to open a Chicago store, but I don't see it on there website.  Still, shipping from ATL wouldn't be too bad.

  • Not sure what you're going to use the basement for, but I would suggest that you not use hardwood in a basement.  No matter how watertight your basement is, you can still run into moisture issues with a wood floor.  You might consider laminate or maybe cork if you don't want laminate.  It's also less expensive.

Cork was my idea too. DH is insisting on hw. Maybe I'll show him your post!

  • When I worked in hardwood flooring, I had a customer call me with a warranty complaint on a bamboo floor she had.  When we sent an inspector out, he found that the moisture level for the floor was too high because there was a planter box outside that covered about the bottom feet of the exterior wall.  The moisture was coming through the wall into the floor and causing it to cup.

Granted, bamboo is more susceptible to moisture than other hardwoods, but a basement has all 4 walls underground.  It's not moisture that you can see coming in, it's the humidity-type moisture that do it.

Not every basement is going to have a problem and the reclamation plank is beautiful, but I wouldn't gamble on it in the basment.

  • Seriously, you're my hero right now, Armandos! DH is browsing that site and really likes the look of their cork, and I'm in love with the reclaimed/handscraped woods.

    You just made my night!

  • I'm glad!  If you have any questions, let me know.  They've gotten some new lines in the last few years, but most of it I'm pretty familiar with.

  • Their stuff is seriously gorgeous. I'm curious to see what shipping would be, but if it's too expensive to ship it, ILs could pick it up in NC in their suburban for us and drive it here. It looks like they don't have a Chicago store.

    I'm ordering samples now! :)
