Multiples

woman at the mall - b/g identical twins?

While out shopping today, a woman was asking about the babies and I told her we had a boy and a girl.

So she says, "So I guess they're fraternal."  My response was like - well YEAH.

Then she goes on to say, "I'm still convinced that b/g twins can be identical."

I so wanted to use the "his penis is bigger than hers" line I've read on here, but didn't have the guts.

I just told her that mine are very different, paid, and left it at that.  :)

Re: woman at the mall - b/g identical twins?

  • they can be- but it's VERY rare.  The "In the Womb: Multiples" show on Discovery talked about it- how if an egg has an extra chromosome and then splits-- it can result in b/g ID twins.  The show didn't say, however, how truly rare it is... so i think there are a lot of people out there thinking it's more common than it is.

though- she didn't sound like she saw the show- or she would have said that istaed of just "i'm still convinced" lol

  • My supervisor has b/g twins.  He explained to me that they were told they're identical.  Given the penis thing, he doesn't understand how, though.

I saw this on TV - If you conceive and have the rare XXY, which then splits to have XX and XY (I think first you end up with two XXY, but then one loses an X and the other loses a Y), then you can have b/g multiples!

Aside from the rare kind, which I'm sure this lady has no idea about, what is she thinking?  Does she understand the definition of identical?

    I know! LOL

From what I remember reading, there are only a few confirmed sets of B/G ID twins in the WORLD, and I believe they have serious medical problems as a result.

fraternal twin boys born january 2009
  • There are SIX set of confirmed boy/girl twins in the world. So it is very, very rare. Moreover, in boy/girl identical twins, the girl always has Turners syndrome, because she is XO (O = missing chromosome) instead of XX. (source)

    This lady is nuts.

  • WOW...I had no idea it was even possible.  I assume the kiddos would at least look alike a little though, right?

And this lady didn't mention the show, so she didn't know what she was talking about.

My babies are in fact TOTAL opposites.  I look at them all the time trying to find some similarity in them...and just can't see it!
