2nd Trimester

would you plan a trip/fly at 30 weeks?

DH and I were talking and he would like to take a trip this winter and the only time it will work into both of our schedules is when I am 30 weeks (or at 38 weeks, which is obviously a no! :). We'd be flying. For those at 30 weeks, would you be comfortable sitting in a plane and flying, traveling, etc or would you just say better to hold off for down the road (awhile after DC is born)?

Re: would you plan a trip/fly at 30 weeks?

  • I'll probably be flying home to California for a baby shower between 30 and 32 weeks as long as my doctor says it's OK.

  • i wouldnt fly but as for traveling by car - it depends on how long the drive is...

  • We took a vacation before DD was born and I was 29-30 weeks. It wasn't too bad traveling, I just made sure that I wore comfortable clothes and got up every couple of hours to walk around. It was a 2-3 hour flight and then a 1-2 hour car ride.

  • I flew from NJ to CA when I was 27 weeks.  I was a bit uncomfortable but it wasn't terrible.  It was well worth the trip!  At 31 weeks I drove 10 hours to NC for our babymoon.  Again, well worth it.  Just get up and walk alot and drink alot of water.

  • We're driving 12 hours (one way) this week for Christmas.  I'm 30 weeks.
  • I am in sales and fly almost weekly. I have to admit that it has started to get a little harder but with good planning you should have no problems. My doctor told me I could fly up to 36 weeks... I am not going to but he said I could.

A couple things to keep in mind: 1-Aisle seats are a must! 2-Get up every hour or so to just walk. 3- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. 4-Drink a TON of water... helps reduce swelling. And finally 5- Avoid layovers like the plague unless you have a ton of time. Running through the airport is no fun when you aren't pregnant and 100 times worse when you are! Big Smile I hope you guys have a great trip!

  • I just did it. It was a 12 hour trip (broken down into 2 flights, with an hour layover). I was totally fine. Just try and get an aisle seat, and stay hydrated.

  • Every pregnancy is different, so I would talk to your doc.

If she says it's okay than go for it!

    I am jealous!

  • I plan to fly at 27 weeks.  And if it had worked out better with our schedules to go on the trip at 30 weeks, I would have gone then unless my OB said not to.  I think it's fine as long as you follow the advice PPs have suggested (i.e. aisle seats, drinking lots of water, standing/walking every hour or so, etc.).  It might be a little uncomfortable, but worth it IMO.
  • I plan to at 29 weeks.  The midwife said 32-34 is the cut off for most normal pregnancies and I should be fine.  She did say drink a lot of water and you'll probably be swollen the day after flying.

  • sure, why not?
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • It really depends where to. I wouldn't plan to go to anywhere remote, or too far away from a hospital should anything happen (*God forbid*). Also before traveling, I'd get the number of a local hospital and OB office incase. Most likely you wouldnt need it, but It would sure ease my mind to have. GL

  • Yes. I flew up until I was around 33 weeks with DS - it is really not a big deal.

  • I think you would be fine at 30 weeks. I was still feeling pretty great around that time with my first pregnancy.  However I was abnormal and started having pre-term labor so I got restricted to travelling right around that time.  Just have back up plans or trip insurance in case you can't make the trip.
  • We're attending a wedding in my hometown (12 hour drive or a short flight) at 30 weeks.  My doctor just asked that I carry all my medical documents with me and come in for a check up right before to make sure I'm OK.  They also warned me to check w/ the airline before buying tickets b/c different airlines have different pregnancy flying rules.
