Do people base baby shower gifts around the theme if they know it? Like if it's rubber ducks would people buy yellow things?

Do you mean the theme of the shower, or the theme of the nursery?  I never use registries, but I usually know the nursery decor.

In my experience people who don't buy off the registry buy pink or purple stuff if you're having a girl, yellow or green if you don't know yet, and blue if you're having a boy.

Sure, an invitation goes out and has some kind of "motif" - but really.... people aren't going to know if there is a true overall "theme".

And even if I knew there was a theme for the SHOWER- I wouldn't buy based on that.
