2nd Trimester

Did you really think you wouldn't gain weight?

You're pregnant. Get over it. It's better than not gaining weight.

Re: Did you really think you wouldn't gain weight?

  • THANK YOU! I'm so tired of these "I've gained 6 pounds and I'm 30 weeks and I'm freaking out!" posts.

    You don't agree?

  • Haha!  Seriously!  Every time someone posts about gaining weight, I want to offer a trade....at least you're not getting yelled at for losing too much weight!  You're pregnant, gain weight, its what happens.

  • I can only answer for myself here... but for me, it's not necessarily about gaining weight, it's about gaining extra weight.  I think that's the fear, if you're talking about the post below.

    You don't agree?

Sometimes, yes.  I get pretty annoyed with the posts that are like "I've gained 6 pounds at 20 weeks, is that too much?" and "OMG I'm still down 5 pounds, whoa is me".

But the post below, I think that sometimes people legitimately struggle with weight anxiety, and need support.  Pregnancy is a hard time for a lot of people who have weight issues (or like me, have had eating disorders in the past).  I don't think there is anything wrong with reaching out for help if you really are struggling.

i absolutely see both sides of this. Yes, almost every pregnant woman needs to gain weight. However, it is also a challenge and can be very emotional for women. I think freaking out that "you're fat" when you are far below the recommended weight gain is ridiculous! As someone who gained A LOT of weight w/their first pregnancy, it can be emotionally devestating.

I agree.  I know I need support with it sometimes.

  • Also, every pregnanct is so different.  I gained 48 lbs w/ DD1, 38 w/ DD2.  So far at 19 weeks, I have gained 7 lbs this time.  However, that said - I am so much bigger the 3rd time around!

I personally use pregnancy as an excuse to eat (oh, and the year of BF too!).

  • My pet peeve is when people say they are getting fat when pregnant!  Oh or worse when peple who never have kids say things like "you are going to get so big and fat" . It's a baby bump...not fat! I think bumps are cute and wish people loved the bumps more because they are so cute and mean you have a LO on the way!

  • I used to be an anorexic. During this pregnancy, I haven't been able to gain weight (go figure) and I'm still losing it. My doctors didn't get concerned until week 28 and now LO is only in the 21st percentile. If he or she falls below the 20th percentile, they are inducing me. I would MUCH rather have gained extra weight than risk the life of my child.

On the opposite end, you only need to worry about it if your doctor is concerned and/or it puts you at risk for pre-e.

If you eat what you're supposed to, you should be fine. Worry about your weight after the baby is born.

  • I agree shorty, and especially with all you are going through it really is a small potatoes issue. Buuuut I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I look at the scale and think "sweet mother of jesus..." But luckily my weight gain has been minimal and I have to remind myself that this is normal, and healthy. We are just so trained to maintain or lose for most of our lives that I think it's a major brain adjustment to accept the numbers going up!

  • I'm looking forward to seeing how much I gained at my appointment on Monday!  The way I see it, I eat relatively healthy and I feel good.  The number doesn't bother me at all.

  • meh, Its annoying when people do it and post a pic and its like they are fishing for compliments. When its a legit thing, like they have actually gained too much or too little according to their OB and they are concerned about it I dont really mind.
  • Im just glad someone posted something besides a Guess The Gender post.  I mean, really?

I might have a  bump in the front, but I'm pretty sure my@$$ wasn't this size before.  Wink  I'm just sayin'!

  • I'm comfortable with gaining whatever I need to.  Of course, I'm not necessarily looking forward to bigger numbers on the scale, but I am looking forward to a big baby bump!

My mom keeps saying, "when you get really fat," and "you're not fat yet," and "your butt is going to get huge!"

I'm like, thanks mom, that's the self esteem boost I need.

  • Actually, I was hoping my baby would just live off my existing fat, and I'd come out of this looking like the brown Britney Spears. Is that wrong?

What you're dealing with is a completely different issue and I hope and pray that all works out for your and your LO.

However, I really do see how people can become anxious about weight gain during pregnancy... saddle-bags do not equal baby weight, if ya know what I mean.  And for people who have struggled like you and I in the past, seeing the scale creep and wondering how much is attributed to baby and pregnancy and how much is attributed to not thinking about every.single.bite.you.take, could be really troublesome.

I am not talking about the "I gained 3 lbs! I'm so fat!" posts, either... THEY friggin' annoy me.

I couldn't agree more. I struggled with gaining weight when I was pregnant with DD and had to have several growth ultrasounds just to be sure she was gaining. I am struggling this time around also and would love to see a nice 5 lb gain on the scale at my next visit!

Hehe I was hoping the same thing.

I've gained somewhere around 18-19 and luckily it's all right in the bump though... so I feel really lucky.  I thought I was going to really struggle and gain a lot more than was healthy.

  • mmmm, obviously no one expects not to gain weight...I think a little occasional anxiety or freak-out moments are normal - I am pretty sure most of us vent and move on...

  • I really think this is about perspective...if you are struggling gaining weight, then a post that says, "I hate gaining weight and seeing the number on the scale go up!" it is going to be annoying. Alternatively, if you've gained too much and you see a post saying, "I've only gained 3 pounds! What should I do?!" then that will be annoying.

Our society focuses so much on weight and puts so much pressure on women, that it's completely normal to freak out about weight while pregnant - whichever side of it you fall on. As we've all said, every pregnant woman gains weight differently, and we should just accept it until your doctor tells you there's a problem.

Although I haven't dealt with this personally, I imagine getting pregnant after a history of an eating disorder would be extremely difficult. I would much rather see a legitimate post about that than someone yelling that they can't imagine getting any bigger b/c they're stretched to their limit - and then posting a pic of an extremely tiny bump to fish for compliments. Or gender posts.

  • Its not that women dont expect to gain weight. I think the post below was about adjusting to the changes your body is going through more than anything.

And honestly sometimes its hard to feel pretty when the bloat, reflux and added cushion are there too.

     Maybe im too sensetive...damn hormones.

Ummm I'm assuming you are referring to my post. ?I never said I didn't expect to gain weight. ?I was talking about how bad I feel some days with the weight gain. ?If you supposedly suffered from an ED before, then you would understand this and not be so rude. ?But I guess that's what you're known for on this board. ?If you had a problem with my post you could have said something on my post rather than make one about me.?

Agreed on all points. I'm almost 26 weeks and have gained almost 40 pounds. I've been put on a dietary exchange program, so hopefully that will help. It's hard when everyone but the doctor says, oh, but you're pregnant! Of course I want to tell myself that too, but to be in denial that yeah, I have gained too much weight and have got to watch it would be bad for myself and the baby.

Yeah...when I told my grandmother I was pregnant, she said, oh I knew it because your butt looks bigger. I was like, gee, thanks gramme.  I'm pretty sure my butt isn't any bigger than it was before I got pregnant just yet (I was like 7 weeks at the time).

I have never cared about the weight issue - and I thought I was doing great until my dumb midwife told me I was gaining weight too quickly and I better lay off the carbs and sugar or my baby was goign to be a moose.  THAT gave me a slight complex but I'm getting over it.  Dumb woman.

  • I think I'm doing good. I gained 5.5 in the first trimester and my doctor said they would like to see a total of 25-30 and I'm totally ok with that. I eat really healthy but I need to exercise way more.
