3rd Trimester

Birth control after?

My dr brought this up at my appt this week.  She talked about an progesterone only pill or IUD.   What are you ladies planning on using? TIA!

Re: Birth control after?

  • Mirena IUD.

I had it after DS and I LOVED it. No periods (for me, some women still get them) you don't have to remember to take anything and it lasts for 5 years.

I love BC you don't have to think about lol

  • I plan on talking to my midwife at the next appointment about the hormone free IUD. I like that it doesn't have hormones so it won't interfere with breastfeeding and it can come out whenever we're ready to try for a second child.
  • Not sure yet... I don't want to go back on the pill because it took 5 months for me to start ovulating when I went off of it before.  I want to have some more control over when I get pregnant again (ie... no more Christmas babies!).  We might just stick with condoms at first and see how we like that....

Just so you know...condoms suck! lol If you want to have "some more control", they are probably not the way to go. That was my bc method when I got pregnant...unexpectantly.... Confused ahah

  • Like a pp...I will most likely try the hormone-free IUD so that I can breastfeed. Although, my hubby is already asking, "how long after you give birth can you get pregnant again?" MEN...ugh! lol

The Mirena won't effect breast feeding because it is a very low dose hormone.  My midwife stated that i would be able to use it no problem while breast feeding. The copper IUD can cause a lot of problems. My sister has severe cramping and tons of bleeding with hers. Just thought I would tell ya.

I didn't know that it wouldn't affect BF. That's good to know.

I chose the Mirena over the Paraguard (hormone free) because all the research I had done said that the Paraguard caused more/heavier bleeding on a monthly basis and I already bleed pretty heavily. Not having a period at all on thh Mirena was amazing. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't had a period in almost 3 years except the 2 I had right after I had my IUD out. It's going to be quite the shock after this baby is born...lol

  • Leaning towards Mirena. Heard great things about it from other moms and like that you can have it removed when you're ready to get preggo again and it won't impact breastfeeding.

  • My MW recommended the Mirena or the nuvaring so I'm trying the nuvaring right now. I know some people are also on the mini-pill, all are safe while BFing.

  • I was leaning toward the IUD, sounds like it's the way to go - I really don't want to take that pill everyday and DH and I really dislike condoms... I think I will talk to her about Mirena, I like that you can take it out when you are ready to TTC again.  thanks!
  • Im just going to go on the pill.

  • DH will probably be getting snipped.  After DS1 I used a diaphragm.
  • I honestly hadn't even given this any thought...looks like Mirena is the popular choice.  I'm going to talk to my OB about options at my next appt.

I had the Copper T IUD for 7 years and loved it.  I will go with another hormone free IUD, and then if in a few years we are really finished dH will get snipped.
