Savings Plan for LO?

Dh and I have some money saved for lo and I am trying to think what to put it in.  I have heard 529 plans are limited and have big fees.  What are your plans?

Re: Savings Plan for LO?

  • Our current plan is just to stick $200/month into an ING account.

  • Not there yet - We want to get all debt paid before doing this, including our cars so we've got a year or so to go.

I would post this question on Money Matters on The Nest - They will probably be able to give you the best recommendation.

  • My first knee jerk instinct was to open a 529, but we spoke to a financial adviser and decided to go with a Roth IRA instead.

You're more limited in investment choices with a 529, and we found that the fees were pretty outrageous.

  • We have a lot of our own debt to pay off, so no savings for LO yet.

I will however, open a UPROMISE account for her.  Upromise has helped me pay down my student loans.  Now I'll use it to save for hers.  If you haven't heard of it, check it out.  Other people can help contribute too!

March 21, I find out how far along we are. :)
