2nd Trimester

20 wks and I can't get my wedding ring on!

I'm exactly 20 weeks today and this morning I couldn't get my wedding ring on, I've been trying all morning thinking maybe I slept funny and that my finger is more swollen than normal and I was able to squeeze it on, but then almost couldn't get it off!   I thought I'd be able to wear it at least a few more weeks!  I don't feel swollen or anything.  I'm chuggin water to see if that helps, but I don't think it will.

Anyone else have to leave their ring at home around the same time?

Re: 20 wks and I can't get my wedding ring on!

  • I'm terrified of this! I only have about 2 1/2 more weeks til I'm 20w, and for that reason I NEVER take my rings off for anything. Before the BFP, I would take them off and even forget to put them back on for a day or two.

Now? You can't catch me without them. My mom worries that if I don't take them off, my fingers will get so swollen that it'll be painful, I won't be able to GET them off, and I'll have to have them cut off like hers. Ahhh.

  • My band was a bit tight to start with cause when I got them saudered (sp??) the band was much thicker. So I have left my ring at home for the past week and only wear it when we go out which isn't often! I just don't want to go through the hassle of getting it resized now and then again after the baby is born even if its covered with my warranty.

  • I had to stop wearing mine over a month ago! So swollen! I wear my band around my neck now :)
  • I am able to wear my rings, but I am terrified of them getting stuck. I take them off every night before I go to bed just to make sure.
  • That's a bit early, usually doesn't happen to 3rd tri.  Definitely mention it at your next appointment though as it is a warning sign (pre-e maybe?)
  • Eh, I'm having the same issue.  I can still get them on and off, but some mornings it is a struggle....I definitely can correlate it to how hydrated I am and how much salt I've had the previous days.  I'm positive for me it's not a pre-e sign, though....Dr. thinks my heart rate and bloodwork have been great so far.  I have been scoping out cheaper sterling silver options, though.  I told DH that once they get too "stuck," I'm buying a fake!

  • my rings have gotten looser, I'd mention it to your doc, that's pretty early for so much swelling
  • Some days my rings are super tight and I have to use lotion to get them off and other days they are fine.I guess it just depends on how hydrated we are. I plan to wear mine until my fingers remain swollen. I really do not want to take them off.

  • I started leaving mine behind at around 19 weeks.  I think by 20 was when I went and bought a cheap-o ring for a place holder.  Occasionally I try putting my wedding ring on thinking I've been kidding myself, because like you I don't feel swollen, I drink a TON of water. Obviously everyone is different but it's not uncommon.

  • No, but the other day I had to drop my rings off to get them checked for warrenty and I went grocery shopping while waiting and I hated having a big ole belly without my ring. I know the day may come though
  • I got a cheap ring ($15) and use it now. It was about the same size as my wedding ring. My DH took it from me Tuesday and cut it, then filed the sharp edges so it can grow with me! He's such a sweetie!
  • I actually saw a lot of posts like this in 1st tri, so you lasted longer than most!

  • I'm in a different boat....I'm 20 weeks and can't get mine off. After trying many many many different attempts...they will have to be cut off after Christmas....it makes me want to cry.Crying
  • MIne are still ok for now but last pregnancy I had to take them off around 36 weeks or so.  I've heard of people buying a bigger ring to wear in it's place so your finger doesn't feel naked.
  • i took mine off last week (at 22 weeks) and decided to leave it off until after baby becuase DH doesn't want me to have to get it cut off.  I have a replacment (my great grandmothers engagment ring) that fits right now and I figured when that one is too small I will wear another ring on that finger until the baby is born.
  • I'm so sorry!  I'm dreading the day this happens to me.  I never-ever take my rings off - unless I'm doing something with concrete or damanage chemicals.  That said, I've been checking every day to make sure they are still fitting properly and that I can get them off easily.

A couple tips for getting rings off it they do get too tight:

    1) Spray your finger and rings with Windex. After a very terrifying trip to a jewelry store where I thought I were going to have a cut off a ring I tried on, the guy explained to me it's an old trick that all the jeweler's use.  The ring slipped right off.

    2) Try soaking your hand in cold water - as cold as you can stand it - for 5 to 10 minutes.  The cold will help to constrict the blood flow and reduce the swelling temporary.  Hopefully enough to get the bands off.

  • me too... i removed my ring  few weeks back . My fingers don't look swollen but i don't know why the ring feels so tight . I did try it on again but removed it immediately. i am afraid that i will have to cut it .

  • ::checking to see if I can still get my rings off & on::

This happened to my friend when she was pregnant.  She went and bought a cheap-o replacement ring.  When the time comes, I think I'll so the same thing.  So far, so good!
