Yet another question for the Jewish ladies

Sorry...didn't know where else to post this question and I'm posting instead of calling someone in the family because I'm 1) at work and 2) have no patience to wait until later when I can call someone Wink

Do we, Jewish folks, (generally) do Godparents? I always thought 'no' but then BIL told me he was a Godfather to one of our nieces. I don't have Godparents and never heard my family mention, it but DH's side of the family may be more 'religious' than we were.

Re: Yet another question for the Jewish ladies

  • Never heard of it, and my great grandfather was an Orthodox rabbi. Maybe it is a modern convention, like Bat Mitzvahs, or something to better assimilate?? We like do that a lot.

  • don't know about other people, but I am the godmother for my nephew.  That being said though, I think it was more of a guardian thing if god forbid something happened to my brother and SIL.  Not sure what DH and I are going to do since we are an interfaith couple.

What is the role of a Godparent?

  • Yes we do...the role is the same...to teach the ways of the religion. both Godparents have to have a Hebrew name.
  • my husband and i are jewish and we don't have god parents...

Same situation when I was growing up. It was more of a guardian role. My husband and I are going through the process of deciding Godparents for our child right now. It can certainly be more of a religious role, but in my family it was always more about guardianship in a worst case scenario.

Unless it is written in your will.... just because someone is your childs Godparents does not give them guardianship if something happens to you or your DH it has to be in your will
