Maternity Clothes Shopping Today - Advice?

Not sure how it will go since it's my first time, but I think it might be frustrating. My regular clothes are finally becoming too uncomfortable and I can't even zip up my regular jeans anymore, so the BeBand is not working so great.

Anything specific I should look for? Is there a way to buy tops that I'm not swimming in at this point? How do I shop for jeans? My regular jeans are all designer because they just fit so much better, however, I don't want to spend that much money on jeans I'll only wear for a few months. I think it will be hard to not buy a pair of designer maternity, but I don't like the jeans I've seen other pregnant women wear. Any advice?

 Thanks!

  • Maybe get some nonmaternity tops if you find you swim in the maternity ones. Lots of flowy, empire waist type things at Kohls. Especially Vera Wang stuff. Also those shirts with the rouching (sp?) on the side let you grow with the shirt. Good luck. Let us know where the jackpot is!

  • I bought a lot of tops at Motherhood that are stretchy so I can even wear them when I'm not pregnant.  I also highly recommend these jeans from them:

  • Where are you going?

You are going to need to wear your belly band even with the pants to keep them up. I wear the same size as prepreg and have a combo of full panel and elastic low bands.

Don't overload on anything yet though. Your body is going to change some. You want some give in your shirts, but you want them to look good. I like the ones that have ties because you can tie them tighter now and then loosen them as you get bigger.

  • definitely try on a pair of each of the different kinds of belly panels (for pants).  i didn't try mine on the first time and bought the demi panel and absolutely hated them because they kept falling down on me.  the full panel ended up being my favorite, but you may find something else works better for your body.

as for tops, if you're not too big yet, i'd try and just get empire waisted tops from the juniors' or women's departments.  they leave you some room to grow but aren't so long.

as for jeans, definitely buy a pair you really like.  i bought a cheap pair the first time around and hated them and ended up buying two great pairs from motherhood maternity that are so comfy & i love them :) totally worth the extra cash.

    have fun shopping!!

  • Ooh, have fun shopping! I am actually in the same situation as you and headed to the mall on Tuesday. I stopped in Gap Maternity and bought a great pair of jeans (regularly priced $75, on sale for $25), black pants (regular prices $55, on sale for $23) and four tops. Their plain cami's are on sale and so were the rest of their shirts. I do swim in one of them and can't wear it yet, the rest are pretty fitted.

I also went to one of my favorite stores and bought two of those sweaters that are just open. I don't know how to describe them! But they don't have any buttons. I thought I could wear them with cute tanks or other shirts.

I usually buy designer too but am pretty happy with my new Gap jeans! They will for sure hold me over for a few months! Have fun!

  • P.S. your 20 week belly is cute!
  • Thanks for the help! I thought I would try Motherhood, so I will definitely check out those jeans. I'll be at the mall finishing my Christmas shopping, so I'll probably just see what other stores they have too.

I'm not planning on buying a lot and it's ok if I have to keep using my BeBand--it just hard to get it to cover my unzipped zipper on my current pants and I think I expose myself sometimes!

I think I might buy some more long shirt and legging combinations too. Those are so comfy and cute!

  • I like my Gap maternity clothes the best so far.  Style wise I don't really like anything at Motherhood.  I did get t-shirts there though and those work great under cardigans and sweaters.  I love the Gap boyfriend jeans, they are so cute with flats for day and heels at night.  Their sizes run big so you will notice you have to go down a couple sizes. I have a couple of Gap sweaters that still are too big around the belly but I figure I will grow into them and I don't want to constantly be buying new clothes.

Have fun!   Hope you get some great stuff.

  • I invested in a pair of citizens of humanity maternity jeans with the secret fit belly panel and they are SO worth it imo! I love them and they fit perfectly
  • I usually only wear designer denim, and I refuse to buy any while I'm pregnant unless I can find them for under $90 or so. Most pairs you'll see run $175 and up, which is ridiculous (especially at this point- you're already half way done). I love motherhood jeans, BUT you have to try on various pairs. The first pair I bought from them is boot cut and has a blue full panel, and I hate them. I recently went back and tried on others, and I bought two more I LOVE (both with a white full panel). So it really depends on the pair. I have a few pairs of pants that are all the small elastic waist (not full or mid panel) and now I hate them and can't wear them anymore. From what I've heard, most people wear full panel in 3rd tri, so maybe keep that in mind.

Also, while empire waist and flowy shirts looked better when my bump was small, now I find that more fitted things looks better or else I look giant. I love Motherhood's sweaters. I haven't been a huge fan of Gap because none of the stores in my state carry maternity-- ordering online gets old. Old Navy has been great, especially since it's cheap.

I've also been able to keep wearing longer tank tops and boyfriend cardigans, which I love (non maternity). GL!

Thanks! I'm happy about actually looking pregnant now, but you can tell my shirt is too short!

This is what I've heard from other people who bought designer maternity jeans. They said everything else gave them mom butt. I guess I will find out today, but hopefully I will find something good for a lot less money!

  • I live in Florida, so I don't need a large jean wardrobe. But with my last pregnancy I found a pair of Long and Lean medium panel jeans at a Gap Outlet and they fit like a dream! I would have wore them after my son was born, if I wasn't worried about the panel showing. LOL

It really might be worth the investment if you plan on having anymore kids. You don't look pregnant from behind in them at all.
