Send them with something homemade and it will be very nice. Cookies or an ornament - or buy the $1 popcorn tubs from Target dollar spot and a bag of fancy popcorn. Just my thoughts.

Very thoughtful....and I agree with pp- the people that were so good to you are probably just the type that would really appreciate something so heartfelt.
There is no more thoughtful gift than a heartfelt thanks. Something homemade- cookies, banana bread or a craft you made- could go along with but don't cheapen the sentiment with some crap from the Dollar Store.

I think that is totally lovely and I would NOT add on a gift. I think a small gift would just take away from the extreme thoughtfulness of the letter. go for it!
