2nd Trimester

Think I changed my girl name tonight.....

DH & I had the hardest time choosing names. One of our biggest things was choosing something that is not in the top 10 or top 25. We had decided on Audrey if LO is a girl. (3 weeks 'til big U/S) Then yesterday I read an article that mentions that Audrey made a huge jump in 2009, and will likely be one of the most popular names of 2010. I know this wouldn't bother some people, but for some reason, it really matters to me.

So I think we may be switching to Adeline. It's not very popular, and it's actually derived from the same German name that my name, Heidi, is derived from. (Adelheid. Both Adeline & Heidi mean "noble")

Any thoughts?

  • Adeline is pretty - and it is important for me too, to not pick a name that is SUPER popular.  My son, Adrian, is around number 50.  Our girl name is Sadie and that is 100-something.  We don't have another boy name picked yet.

  • I like it better too.

We did the same thing. The name we originally picked is jumping up in popularity. I do not like that, either!

  • I think its sweet that you and your daughter's names would share the same meaning. Would you pronounce it with a long i or more like Ade 'lynn' ? Its pretty either way, and like you said, not very common.

And you could always use Addy or Addie as a nickname.

  • Understandable. I try to avoid trends. My LO's name is one that I can't imagine many people having, and I like it that way.

I actually don't like the name Audrey. Adeline is beautiful though!

  • I can totally understand why it bothers you.  After growing up in a small town with a dozen other Jennifers around my age, I don't want to name my child with a popular name either.   I love both names and agree that Adeline seems to be less popular.
  • Yes, we would pronounce it "adda lynn". I think "adda line" is pretty too, but sounds like "add a line" like a phone commercial to me. LOL.

  • I like Adeline better too.  Plus you don't want your daughter to be in a class with 15 other people with the same name.  I'm a teacher and I swear every other girl is named either Brittany or Briana (they are ALL spelled differently. LOL!!!).

I don't know anyone who has my daughter's name and it's not on any list that I have seen.

Me too! Another option could be Aubrey.  Personally, not one of my favs, but I knew an Aubrey in college...

  • I LOVE the name Adeline. I wish DH felt the same. It's nice that is has meaning, too. I also really love the name Adele.
  • I like it but would you call her Addy? It seems like a name that would get shortened and Addy is pretty popular because Addison is popular.  BTW Audrey is one of our top choices on names too, and I agree, it is getting much more popular.

  • I like both names. We chose "Logan" for DS for the same reason. Then the year after he was born, it was like #19 on the social security list - figures!

I'm sure the Addy NN would happen naturally at school, but we would probably call her by her full name. I don't mind the NN.

Glad to hear positive feedback, ladies!

  • I love Adeline and Addy as a nickname.  When we didn't know if we were having a boy or girl we were seriously considering it, but decided not to since I'm Ali and Addy would be too confusing!
  • FWIW, I would automatically assume it pronounced "add a line" over "add a lynn" but like "add a lynn" better :-)

  • Adeline is pretty - my name is similar, and also means noble (Adele). I always wished it were Adeline instead. Haha.

Our DD was born 2/07 and we named her Audrey because it was classic, yet not very popular. Then, BAM... Everyone anymore is an Audrey. LOL.

    Just our luck... Haha.

  • My daughter's name is Adeline!  I get a lot of great comments about it and I still love it!  Lots of "that was my Grandmother's name" comments.
