So, does your region have any special dishes that people from other parts of the country don't know about / appreciate.
As a good Canadian girl, I feel it necessary to introduce you ladies to one of our favorite dishes in this country......
Poutine.
It's fries, cheese curds and gravy and it's 100% delicious.
Re: Regional Foods (NTTCALR)
I live for cheese curds and they were not a small part of my decision to move back to the Midwest. You know, plus family and all.
I will say, growing up in SoFla we loved all things Conch - especially Conch fritters. It never occured to me that anyone not living in Florida would look at me like a crazy person for asking where I could get some.
ETA:
NE Ohio - home of the Polish immigrants loves them some pierogies!

While it was not invented here... A coney dog (Hot dog, chili, onions and mustard) is a huge Detroit thing... We have a crazy number of restaurants that are "Coney Islands".... My favorite dinner at these places is a coney dog and a greek salad! YUM!
You know, Conch:
It's similar to a large muscle or clam. Also excellent in Chowder. If anyone is ever near Stuart, FL you have to go to Conchy Joe's. Best Conch Chowder and fritters (not to mention Key Lime Pie) anywhere.
Yep I love perogies, hollopchi and perishke.... DELISH!
I can confirm Carrie's story!!
I have never had this, but there is nothing there I don't love, so how could it be bad?
We call 'em brats here aka bratwurst or sausages if you're from outta town.
Hmm Ambrandau, I think I can say that I've never had anything 'conch'.
Pierogies are insanely delish too. yummm.
Apparantly Nanaimo bars are very Canadian as well.
We might have to rumble...H is from Memphis, and there is no rivalry quite like inter-regional BBQ rivalry.
I think everyone knows about most Southern favorites. I can't think of anything typical of my home region that isn't pretty well known (/stereotyped). The only thing I can come up with right now that might not be known all over and is specific to my home town are Goo Goo Clusters.
I like mine with butter and just a little sugar!
I love pierogies!!!!
FAQ: My Friend Just Had a Preemie, How Can I Help?
Most of my texan goodies are pretty common I think. I miss being in central texas and eating buckets of kolaches though (czech pastry filled with fruit filling OR sausage roll type thing)
I think my big thing is TexMex, but that's become totally mainstream.
These look so good!!!
North Carolina BBQ.... yumm

I didn't think it was odd at the time, but now I wonder, since it seems a lot of people haven't heard of them. When DH & I were up north this summer, we went to a restaurant that has conch fritters.

In Western PA we have pierogies as well (LOVE!), but the thing we get labeled with frequently in Pittsburgh is the Primanti Brother's sandwich (sirloin, tomato, cheese, coleslaw and fries on thick italian bread):

See Carrie? They're a real thing!
Thank you for validating me.
Fiddleheads. They're the tops of ferns that come up in the springtime, and we have tons on our property. They taste like a combination of spinach and asparagus:
Those look like tenticles off of a Star Trek alien or something. I have never heard of this!
Best part is if you choose the wrong kind of ferns, you can get violently ill.
You Maineites are hard core.
Ohhh! I love these things. They're sooo good with salt and butter (yes, healthy.. I know)
y'all are making me REALLY hungry. First, I have to say that those fries w/ cheese and gravy look AMAZING, and I LOVE perogies. As far as regional foods go, you can take your pick of anything hispanic, creole, or sea-related. One of my faves, and very common due to our Cuban community (and my husband), is black beans and rice with plantains, usually eaten with any variety of pork. The sweet fried plantains (not to be confused with tostones) are sooooooo good. yummy! Oh, and the mojitos. But I don't drink, so although I have no personal experience, I hear they are delicious.
I saw thsi on the food channel....top ten places to pig out!!
OMG none of the North Jersey ladies put this
to make...
Fiddleheads are good, but I guess they do look kind of odd
