Pregnant after a Loss

Another MTHFR Q

I was diagnosed just days before my BFP, so I'm still learning about this disorder.  My doctor told me I'll have to take baby aspirin every day, but didn't mention the supplements.

Does having MTHFR mean you need to stay on the extra B vitamins for life?

Re: Another MTHFR Q

  • My hemotologist told me to stay on extra folic acid, B6 and B12 for life, that it would not hurt for sure and might help avoid long term issues.  From what I understand the long term problems with MTHFR are that it can raise the level of homocysteine in your blood, which can lead to coronary artery and heart disease.  Some research shows folic acid, b6 and b12 help avoid that.

The reason to take the supplements during pregnancy is also to help avoid some birth defects which are associated with problems absorbing vitamins like folic acid - spina bifida is one.

He told me the supplements don't really change the clotting issues during pregnancy, that is what I am on Lovenox for (I have compound issues with clotting, not just MTHFR, and I inject a high dose of Lovenox twice a day).

    Hope this helps.

  • What I have been told by my hematologist is similar to pp. Basically, if your homocysteine levels are fine and you don't have any other clotting disorders, the MTHFR is really nothing to worry about. Actually, the hematologist was more concerned about autoimmune problems w/me and brushed off the MTHFR b/c there were no other clotting/homocysteine problems.
